' Today is Jules Verne’s birthday. Widely regarded as one of the founders of modern science fiction (indeed, often called the Father of Science Fiction), Verne’s works explored many of the new technologies and scientific concepts produced during the 19th Century. Many of the fictional machines in his writing anticipated the factual development of technology in the 20th Century. Strictly speaking, he is the father of hard science fiction. The story is, that when he read HG Wells, The Time Machine, he exclaimed indignantly, "Il invente! The lack of any physical possibility for a time machine disturbed him. One of the amusing features of Well's story is that the time traveller brings a flower from the future back to his own time. The atoms that compose the future flower, of course, already exist in the past, so the same atoms are existing in two different places in the past. Think of all the Laws of Conservation that are broken! It's the sort of thing that would have enraged Verne.
