Israeli newspaper says PM, defence minister want to attack Iran before U.S. election
JERUSALEM — Israel’s prime minister and defence minister would like to attack Iran’s nuclear sites before the U.S. election in November but lack crucial support within their cabinet and military, an Israeli newspaper said on Friday.

The front-page report in the biggest-selling daily Yedioth Ahronoth came amid mounting speculation — fuelled by media leaks from both the government and its detractors at home and abroad — that war with Iran could be imminent even though it might rupture the bedrock ties between Israel and the United States.

“Were it up to Benjamin Netanyahu and Ehud Barak, an Israeli military strike on the nuclear facilities in Iran would take place in the coming autumn months, before the November election in the United States,” Yedioth said in the article by its two senior commentators, which appeared to draw on discussions with the defense minister but included no direct quotes.

Spokesmen for Prime Minister Netanyahu and Barak declined to comment.

I put this in foreign policy, though it could easily fit in election news. An attack on Iran by Israel just before the election will affect the election in a big way. The news that Israel would utterly defy U.S. policy of the Obama administration also plays into the hands of Republicans because they will say that Israel had to go it alone because Obama would not protect poor defenseless Israel. It will also affect the Jewish vote. We Jews predominantly vote Democratic and liberal. The more liberal of us will be pushed to the left, but centrists that normall vote Democratic may be pushed right.
Of course, that doesn't even address the death toll, the skyrocketing price of oil that would likely drive the world into another recession, or the possibility that Iran will make good on their threats going back to the Bush administration and attack U.S. military and civilian interests in the gulf, thus dawing us into an unwanted and unnecessary war.

On the other hand, Obama could declare a very satisfying State of Emergency that would bring him to the fore, eclipse Romney, and make him look like a strong President. [Well, miracles do sometimes happen!!]

But don't get too excited -- this is just one more incident in keeping the pot boiling, making Iran waste money in unnecessary military preparedness, and keeping the price of oil high.
