PEACE, ORDER AND GOOD GOVERNMENT

Quote
In many Commonwealth jurisdictions, the phrase "peace, order and good government" is an expression used in law to express the legitimate objects of legislative powers conferred by statute. The phrase appears in many Imperial Acts of Parliament and Letters Patent, most notably the constitutions of Canada, the Commonwealth of Australia and, formerly, New Zealand and South Africa. Contrast with "Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness"...a phrase found in the United States Declaration of Independence.
Hmmph....It seems to me that the childish self-absorption and anarchy which has devolved from American "life, liberty and (a supposed) pursuit of happiness" is harmful to both life and the pursuit of happiness -- and even, ultimately, to liberty.

I think this will distinguish Canadians from Americans far into the forseeable future. Canadians, especially educated Canadians, usually are rather disgusted by what they see of American behaviour -- especially social behaviour.

In Canada, PEACE, ORDER, GOOD GOVERNMENT, as an ideal, trumps the incoherent blither of the Declaration of Independence.

Indeed, Canadian "social behavior" stands in high regard:

Woman raped at Calgary cemetery

(Toronto) grandmother aghast child killer may walk free

Montreal ATM robbery

St. Michel man stabbed during armed robbery

Isn't the term "good government" rather ambiguous? [Linked Image from i48.photobucket.com]

rick, please tell me you didn't think numan's post had anything to do with the non-existence of any criminal activity in Canada?
nono
Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness is shabby rhetoric, something the framers were very good at. Today, marketing has taken its place in most instances.
Don't waste time looking for meaning, as there is none.
Since my exposure to Canada and Canadians is quite limited I won't opine with respect to the functioning of the state in that country.
Although, statistically, they do seem to be less trigger "happy" than we. wink

I was simply highlighting the "social behavior" both countries have in common - crime - because, you know, they're "disgusted" with aspects of our "behavior"... smile

OTOH, "PEACE, ORDER, GOOD GOVERNMENT" could at any time be co-opted as a slogan for an aspiring fascist dictator.

IN any case, I doubt that very many people in the USA would disagree with those goals

You mean as the slogan "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness" has been co-opted by the achieved fascist dictatorship of the one-percent Money-Lords of the USA ?

That would be them. ThumbsUp

The one I like best is Uhuru na Umoja (Tanzania) and from the Swahili meaning Freedom and Unity. But the reason I like it is because the word Uhuru has always really sounded like freedom to me. Not sure why.
