Before European Christians Forced Gender Roles, Native Americans Acknowledged 5 Genders It wasn’t until Europeans took over North America that natives adopted the ideas of gender roles. For Native Americans, there was no set of rules that men and women had to abide by in order to be considered a “normal” member of their tribe.
In fact, people who had both female and male characteristics were viewed as gifted by nature, and therefore, able to see both sides of everything. According to Indian Country Today, all native communities acknowledged the following gender roles: “Female, male, Two Spirit female, Two Spirit male and Transgendered.”

Of all of the foreign life ways Indians held, one of the first the Europeans targeted for elimination was the Two Spirit tradition among Native American cultures. I dunno, Phil. I'm not saying this isn't true, but it sounds a bit fanciful to me.

I have read substantially the same information in several places. Which part raises doubts? I will see if I can find other sources.

Far from trying to mislead, I was attempting to enlighten us. I think the attempt to illustrate by using "garden of eden" may have been unwise. The proposal that Europeans coming to the Americas might well have been shocked, offended and threatened by gender issues I find very likely.

I have always thought it was enlightened.

I always respected their honoring the crazy ones who ride around on horseback backwards. Very enlightened way to treat "different" people.
