Okay, this is Khadrey's newest work, and it is absolutely unlike his other stuff (ie, it's just dark, rather than dark and funny).
There is no way to describe the plot itself without spoilers, so I'll just describe the setting and the quality of the book itself.
Alternate world post-apocalypse on crack. Technology is there, just very different than what actually developed on Earth.
The story takes place in an East German or Polish-esque city after a war that almost wipes out humanity. Everyone can already see the NEXT war coming, and a fatal plague called "The Drops" stalks the remains of the city in which place the story unfolds.
Dude is a bicycle messenger. That's all he wants to be. Dude has a girlfriend, who is an actress.
Then dude gets promoted, and his life is set on its ear.
That's really all I can say.
With the caveat that the first 200 pages of this 405 page book are fairly slow (but still interesting), this book is definitely worth reading (especially since the second 205 pages are berserk). The ending is complete, but definitely leaves room for a sequel.
I give it an 8 out of 10. If you don't like it dark and gritty, don't bother, though.

Sounds like it might make a great AA video game.
I'm currently awaiting Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice...A female Celtic warrior seeking revenge for a lover during a dystopian Celtic time. The twist is that she's deeply psychotic and driven to her violent actions by the voices in her head. Has to be played with headphones so you can hear the voices...

I hear the voices without a headset all the time.

Were you hoping for a literary thread? I read self published trash fiction mostly. Because I'm easily amused, it's cheap, and I'm poor. Hadn't heard of Khadrey and I googled him...not much popped up and sadly I clicked away without pursuing it further. If the bicycle messenger needed to carry a sword or wield magic I'd be halfway through it by now. I like the bicycle messenger image; innocent, idyllic, and independent...

Richard Kadrey I do believe HH was trying to throw us off the scent with a stray "h".
