DOJ seeks new emergency powers amid coronavirus pandemic

One of the requests to Congress would allow the department to petition a judge to indefinitely detain someone during an emergency.

Quote
The Justice Department has quietly asked Congress for the ability to ask chief judges to detain people indefinitely without trial during emergencies — part of a push for new powers that comes as the coronavirus spreads through the United States.

Are we about to witness the ultimate "It can't happen here" moment for democracy?

There have been a few of these things trying to happen. This is basic freedom stuff. You wrote this yesterday and, apparently, nobody has much to say about it. All in all this is a pretty active group. One would have thought..........

Maybe everybody is just off for the weekend?

Considering the interviews with young idiots on Florida beaches this week, maybe that would not be such a bad thing...

Bad Idea when President Lincoln did it in Baltimore. Bad idea now, the various Health Departments have a similar power already, and I trust them more than the DoJ.

Maybe much of their actions can be laid at the feet of President Donald (...) Trump* and his administration. After all they did publicly state that the virus was not as hard on the young as it was on the elderly and ill.

This is not to absolve the young, but the pool of experience takes years to fill. Remember, every one of us felt invulnerable at that age.

Isn't it interesting that when something really bad happens (CV19 and the stock market collapsing) that the solutions, even to saving the economy, are socialistic?

You never change things by fighting the existing reality.
To change something, build a new model that makes the old model obsolete.

I never actually believed it would come to where a sitting president could and would destroy the DOJ, to the extent that Trump has.
I knew it was technically possible because almost anything is technically possible.
I just didn't think anyone would ever do it, but then again, The Patriot Act was the warning, and key provisions that were supposed to be sunsetted never were.

This entire Covid-19 is a huge, new, Social experiment, pure and simple and from start to finish (with a little politics for entertainment). The plan is grand with little or no plan part. The only real plan is that being put forward by the Governor of New York and part of that is an obvious hope that the Jackass will take a deep breath, and do the right thing. All in all this is a really impressive act of faith in the unfaithful (but, seemingly, admired for all that). I suspect the most interesting part is for our TV media to be favoring a New York governor over our dear leader the Jackass Donald Trump. That one gave me great humor, this morning, when CNN explained that the Governor was just more popular than the president so they had no choice! <G> But, in the background the Jackass continues with pie in the sky, suggestions that will get you dead, demands for a 500 billion dollar slush fund for his friends, and his standard denials of anybody he used to know but forgot if they dare give offense.

Anyway, when its all over we will know.
We will know what happens when the leader is not always there (no matter where that is).
We will know how smart the American public is when they are warned close behavior with others is dangerous.
We will know that America has some really good people that keep trying even when being ignored
We will know that 'worldwide' means exactly that and includes the United States of America
We will know just who is on 'our' side (and many will either ignore or enthusiastically embrace those who are not)
We will have a wonderful time beating up on one another with some vigor
We will, and are, showing the world how we deal with serious health issues as well as each other.

(and, I suspect, a LOT more!)

Yeah, it's not like HHS is carrying the ball, here.

This is just a raw power grab. Barr is the one asking, so all the "special powers" are already slated for abuse.

I'm not sure Health Department enforcement officers are going to be as successful as the national Guard at getting people to stay inside. We're talking mega-stupid people here. Like the folks who rush out to buy guns when threatened by a virus.
