The playing field has shifted so far to the right that many groups have never even heard of their true opposition!

For example, we have a group that wants to forbid abortion versus a group that wants to leave that choice to the owner of the womb in question. But what about the zero-population-growth zealots who want mandatory abortion under particular circumstances (like in China?).

We have the fiscally conservative versus those who support a government-managed social safety net. But what about the cradle-to-grave crowd (as in Scandanavia or Netherlands) much less the old "eat the rich" position?

Just glancing at this thread shows me why a third party is headed nowhere.

If you aren't independent then I guess you are dependent.

As for left-right and the press, it seems that the press has gone to the two polar extremes and the people are in the under-served middle.

Olyve, you are a person who has all sorts of ideas on how to spend my money. Seniors who have been forced to pay into the system are criticized for expecting something back. Yet I never hear a critique of all the lazy stupid slobs who are on welfare, sitting around eating food I helped put on their plate. If a perwson is in real hardship it is one thing, but the welfare system and other services ot those who do not deserve them are a form of insult and injury to all of us who have applied themselves to life. I think John Smith referred to it as a policy of, "No work no eat". Anyone who can work but doesn't, shouldn't eat.

Not all of us, clarkb. Not all.

Because your above statement confused me, I went back and read the entire thread. I don't know where you got the idea that I was against seniors getting something back for all they have put into the system. I happen to approve of Medicare and said so. I would like to see EVERYBODY who is paying into the system, receive the same benefits.
From earlier in this thread....

No, I DON'T think you're a leach and I DON'T think you should NOT use medicare.

The hypocracy is stunning though.
It's the whole....I've got mine thing....who cares about others who need it just as much.

Can you provide links that show that people using the welfare system are lazy stupid and have not sought out work?
If you are unhappy about that form of welfare, what do you think of corporate welfare?

" In 1994, AFDC and food stamps combined cost $38.2 billion.

The same year direct subsidies to corporations cost $50.9 billion.
Tax breaks worth an additional $53.3 billion were also given to corporations. In other words, the total cost of corporate welfare was $104.3 billion. "

Taken from:
Noam Chomsky: "Corporate Welfare in the U.S."
Talk given at Workmen's Circle Hall in Brookline, Massachusetts (4/22/96).

"From 1996 through 2000, just ten large profitable companies enjoyed a total of $50 billion in corporate tax breaks. That brought their combined tax bills down to only 8.9 percent of their $191 billion in U.S. profits over the five years. In just the most recent two years for which data are available, these ten companies got $29 billion in tax welfare, and paid a mere 5.9 percent of their profits in federal income taxes."
