Am I the only one who is a bit disturbed by the pomp and circumstance in regards to the Pope's birthday?

Today marks the anniversary of Virgina Tech, Americans by the thousands are losing their homes to foreclosure, there is a food supply crisis worldwide and we this month was one of the worse months in Iraq.

Yet our President sees fit to throw a birthday bash for a man who is simply visiting this country. I will give you that in some circles he could be construed as a leader but given he is the POPE of all people, shouldn't that mean that their would be some reverence to the worlds suffering? Not only that but we are spending how many thousands on a state dinner for someone who won't even be freaking attending!!

I've yet to see one news report or reporter questions this show of extreme while so many suffer. I grasp that there is a certain protocol for visiting VIP's, but does it have to be to this excess?

IMO it only again should remind Americans how disconnected this President is from the realities of the world around him. I would have at least hoped that more people would have called him on it...but alas they have not.

Was watching CNN at lunch time yesterday.

They were discussing protocol when meeting with The Pope.

The reporter asked a White House spokeswoman if there were "any concerns with The President meeting with The Pope".

I'm thinking "Yeah sure, The President is meeting with The Pope!"

I can see it now: GWB - "Hey yer holiness" (with a big pat on the back pushing The Pope forward, nearly giving him whiplash) "Uh he he, I think I'll call ya 'Benny'" <smirk>

Nearly right, given the lack of imagination and an almost ready made nick name it would have to be

"Benny Boy"

I guess after reading about girls being sold for marriage in order for their families to eat this including 10 year olds giving birth; I was a bit sensitive the idea that a man of "GOD" and our President could see it as approrpriate to throw a lavish party.

It does seem like our nation has become "I'll have mine and F*** those who go without" a long way from the WWII days when people sacraficed together.

Thanks for the funny pics guys!!

while ww 11 period undoubtedly had a different tone, i think the same focus applied only it wasn't such a mass cultural thing. the ability to attain the illusion of wealth through the purchase of cheap stuff and of course unchained credit has pushed us to the point where much of our true barbaric nature surfaces. no doubt the pope's presence anywhere signals a conflict for many, and for me it is just another fine example of the inate hypocricy humans are capable of, and the sad paradox of good and evil. if we had a vomiting emoticon i would puke right now.

Saw a news clip: The Pope finished an address from the podium and GWB leans over and says "Awesome speech"
