Meanwhile, let's hold to Jesus' admonition: "render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's and unto God that which is God's". Seems Jesus was pretty clear on the notion humans can hold two allegiances at one time; one to government and the other to God! --Are we required to interpret "render unto Caesar" in this way and if so how do we reconcile it against other Biblical admonitions that warn against trying to serve both God and Mammon?[snip] Its easy once one considers the definition of "Mammon"It's also easy when one remembers that in the United States of America, the government is the servant to the people, not vice versa. Today's government is serving Mammon. —Matthew 6:19-21,24

Wait, do we know why there was a flag? Maybe they are spending a lot of time praying about the state of the nation. Maybe it is an integral part to the founding of the religion.
I cannot say because I cannot get the article to open so maybe someone can give me some incite.
We have a flag at the chapel here with every soldier that wears it on his/her shoulder. Faith is personal and a house of worship is where you share that relationship with like minded people in a special setting.
I also wonder if it is tacky.

You're right, Mellow Julia, it was the latter. The feds did not threaten the church with mass incarceration, just a huge and everlasting fine.

Steve - I guess I see a fine line. I would have no problem with a church where the minister said "You have all heard about candidate X. This (wo)man is a great citizen, and someone to look up to, because (s)he has done Y and Z. I suggest you go out and try to do the same."
That's different, although not very, from telling a congregation to vote for x, y, or z -- and to me, it's the fine line between being a church, and being a PAC.

I feel very much the same, Julia. However, I don't presume to tell people who choose to practice their religion differently than I do that they "should" be more like me. And that's what I got from the essay: the writer was telling her audience that folks who pledge to the flag during their religious rituals . . . shouldn't.

We are on the same page when it comes to telling people how to practice their religion. Christians occasionally like to tell other Christians how to worship, though* - I'm not sure I even noticed the attitude, it is so common.
Julia * yes, I read the same attitude in some Buddhist pages. I try not to read those pages a second time.
