Ken, I think Gawd has given one species a divine right to more than that. We are also given the task of spreadin' the word o' the lord. All the other birds and best of the forest are rendered into our sevice and we are given the task of managing these resources as we are rendered into the service of our lord.
That's just one interpretation of the knowledge that comes down from the ages crediting us with the common sense to to survive in a civilized and hence socialized world.

...any kind of law imposing an economic penalty on the birth of children would condemn members of certain religions to a life of celibacy or to financial strain resulting from the practice of their religion. ...not an 'economic penalty' under my proposal. It's congratulatory. Congrats on your first born! We'll let you take a deduction - but just this one kid.

One of the reasons Japan's birthrate is so low (according to the link I posted here yesterday) is that pregnancy and birth are not covered on health insurance, because they are not illnesses. Very interesting take on pregnancy - I like it.

But Steve, there is always the slight possibility that the meaning of life is the number that guy was seeking in the movie Pi. You just never know.
Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please.

The purpose of life is to learn.
Some may want to just eat, sleep, and reproduce, but please don't speak for me.

It would look like that to you, and to some others, perhaps, but when you take in the tradition of public schools available to all* children in this country, your proposal would effectively shut the school doors to less-affluent non-first-borne children. Those doors have been open for a long time. Any time you take access away, you effectively impose a penalty. *Standard disclaimers re: gender and race apply
