Just found this browsing through the Congressional Daily Records from Sunday, September 28, 2008, and thought I'd post it here.

In Remembrance Of Paul Newman
Hon. Dennis J. Kucinich Of Ohio
In The House Of Representatives
Sunday, September 28, 2008

Mr. Kucinich: Madam Speaker, I rise today to honor the life and legacy of Paul Newman, distinguished actor, entrepreneur, and philanthropist whose intelligent movie roles and dedication to promoting the common good has touched the lives of thousands of people.

Paul Newman was not only a Hollywood legend whose movie roles include "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" and "The Hustler," but also an avid philanthropist who dedicated his life to creating opportunities for the economically disadvantaged and for other communities of need. He was nominated for ten Oscar Awards and won the best actor award in 1987 for his role in "The Color of Money." Mr. Newman was as big of a social activist as he was a movie star. In 1988, he founded Hole in the Wall Camps--a camp for children with life- threatening illnesses. Since then, camps have been held all over the world, including in the United States, Italy, Ireland, Hungary, and the United Kingdom, as well as in parts of Africa and Asia. Almost 200,000 children with life-threatening illnesses have attended Hole in the Wall Camps, making it the largest and most successful family of camps in the world.

In 1982, he founded Newman's Own natural food company, whose motto is "Shameless exploitation in pursuit of the common good", a reflection of his compassion, selflessness and dedication to advocating for vulnerable communities. Since its founding over 20 years ago, Newman's Own has raised over $250 million dollars in proceeds, all of which is donated to educational and charitable causes around the world. Between the work of Hole in the Wall Camps and Newman's Own, Mr. Newman has advocated for peace, raised awareness for various social and economical issues, and has worked towards combating the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Madam Speaker and colleagues, please join me in honoring the life of a true humanitarian and legend, Paul Newman, whose inspiration and genius will continue to touch the lives of generations to come.

Wow, a knight. Thank you so much for posting that.
What a beautiful tribute and from none other than Dennis Kucinich.

I knew Paul Newman was one of a kind and I knew some of that but not all.

Wow, I raise my cup.
Rest in Peace, Mr Newman. We will miss you.

I think my favorite Paul Newman moment was probably in "Cool hand Luke" when he was asked why he said he could eat "50" eggs instead of 25 or 35, and Luke said "Well, it seemed like somethin to do".

Paul was a humanitarian and a quiet contributor to several progressive causes.

He will be missed.

Fantastic memory: Shortly after Plaza Suite opened in NY, I went to see it. SRO, so I stood. (Ah, the good old days. smile ) From murmurs in the audience, everyone knew there was someone BIG attending. At the end of the first intermission I turned around and stared straight into Paul Newman's eyes. I was so stunned I didn't even look for his wife. One of those moments when I thought, "Okay. If I get hit by a taxi cab when I leave here, my life would have been fine."

Over the years, many women have been similarly affected.

I worked at Hamptons when I lived and went to college in Los Angeles from 1985 - 1990. As this link suggests, it was owned by Paul Newman.

In fact, the restaurant served Paul Newman's French Dressing before Newman's Own came into being.

The truth of the matter was, the owners were Ron and Ann Buck and Paul Newman and Joann Newman were very good friends of Ron and Ann's who helped them develop the recipes for the restaurant.

Apparently, because of the success of the recipes at Hamtpon's - Newman's Own, Inc came into being.

Paul Newman did drawings and his art hung in Hamptons. One of his pieces was titled: The cat regards his dinner.

Just a little Hollywood trivia/history for you.

Oh, lucky you, Martha...you need not say more. I know just what you mean. cool

I've been listening to all the accolades and memorials about Paul Newman since his passing. While I enjoyed all his classic movies too, I'd have to say my favorite Paul Newman film of all time is probably "Nobody's Fool". It was one of his much later ones, and I loved the way he interacted with all the other characters in the film, particularly Jessica Tandy (it may have been her last film). It's one of the few movies I've ever bothered to actually buy to keep. Definitely gets a big ThumbsUp from me.

He will certainly be missed.

I got it through netflix. It might have been an HBO production--by definition much better than many movies.
