I ran across this today in the news.. Did anyone see information about it in mainstream? To me this IS newsworthy.. I am not a scientist, but I cannot imagine what could be done about such a problem or what kind of havoc it will create the future..

MOSCOW (AP) — The crash of two satellites has generated an estimated tens of thousands of pieces of space junk that could circle Earth and threaten other satellites for the next 10,000 years, space experts said Friday.

10,000 years? Hmmm.. Not good!

Quote
"At physical contact at orbital speeds, a hypersonic shock wave bursts outwards through the structures," Oberg said in e-mailed comments. "It literally shreds the material into confetti and detonates any fuels."

Most fragments are concentrated near the collision course, but Maj.-Gen. Alexander Yakushin, chief of staff of the Russian military's Space Forces, said some debris was thrown into other orbits, ranging from 300 to 800 miles (500-1,300 kilometers) above Earth.

David Wright at the Union of Concerned Scientists' Global Security said the collision had possibly generated tens of thousands of particles larger than 1 centimeter (half an inch), any of which could significantly damage or even destroy a satellite.

Wright, in a posting on the group's Web site, said the two large debris clouds from Tuesday's crash will spread over time, forming a shell around Earth. He likened the debris to "a shotgun blast that threatens other satellites in the region."

Meanwhile, there's no global air traffic control system that tracks the position of all satellites.

Something new to ponder...

No, didn't see it.

My personal take on the space program: The first & last time I was thrilled by it was 1957 when I stood in the back fields with my family and watched Sputnik pass across the night sky. After that I figured there was way too much that needed attention here on earth; didn't see the point in putting time, energy and money into flying around out in space.

Actually, the Mainstream news is keeping low-key about it because it is really a secret international effort to create a reflective shield around Earth that will reduce the global average temperature by 1.36 degrees Celsius by November 7, 2009. After studying their computer simulated models, it is the consensus of all reputable scientists that it will be successful and on time.;-)

Actually, I think it's the aliens.

They don't want to waste the effort to deal with us going off-planet, so they've induced us to put so much crap in orbit that eventually it will be essentially impenetrable to human spaceflight, thereby containing our virulent species and protecting the rest of the universe.

Ironically, I just saw this! Evidently, stuff is falling out of the sky on Texas!

Quote
DALLAS - Police scanner traffic in Texas was abuzz Sunday morning with reports of fireballs or burning debris in the sky.

Residents in Hill and Navarro counties also reported hearing an explosion or feeling their house shake.

The Federal Aviation Administration's spokesman Roland Herwig attributed the reports to falling debris from a recent satellite collision.

Debris falls from sky on Texas...

Anybody a fan of "Dead Like Me"? The main character is Georgia, an eighteen year old who starts her first temp agency job and is then immdiately killed by a falling Russian Space Station toilet seat on her first lunch break. Instead of "going into the light" she is recruited to work for some time (decades?) as a Grim Reaper, who eases accident victims into their next stage of existance. Comedy ensues... Well, not exactly comedy!

I loved that show - I watched it on netflix - Mandy Patinkin, right? I thought it was bizarrely wonderful and, yes, funny.
