Good Morning Ranters! It's Sunday, March 1, 2009
don't forget . . . every picture tells a story . . . click to learn more!!! Sunrise begins another beautiful day in the neighborhood!
Today's featured neighborhood is Kruger National Park, South Africa
This Day in History, . . .
1781: Articles of Confederation ratified, Philadelphia The first state to ratify was Virginia on December 16, 1777. The process dragged on for several years, stalled by the refusal of some states to rescind their claims to land in the West. Maryland was the last holdout; it refused to go along until Virginia and New York agreed to cede their claims in the Ohio River valley. A little over three years passed before Maryland's ratification.
1805: Supreme Court Justice Samuel Chase acquitted of all charges in impeachment trial Chase was accused of being influenced by his political bias to treat defendants and their counsel in a blatantly unfair manner. But he argued that all of his actions had been appropriately motivated by his duties to justice. His acquittal by a lopsided vote is considered a vital step in establishing the independence of the Judicial Branch from political influence.
He is the only U.S. Supreme Court justice to have been impeached.
1864: Rebecca Lee Crumpler graduates from New England Medical School for Women, becoming first African American woman physician in the US
1872: Yellowstone National Park is established, first national park in the world In an area of only 3,468 square miles, the park includes mountains, streams, plateaus, canyons, one of the largest high-altitude lakes in North America, the largest supervolcano on the continent, and half of all geothermal features in the world.
1896: Henri Becquerel discovers radioactivity
1936: Hoover Dam completed
Rising more than 700 feet above the raging waters of the Colorado River, it was called one of the greatest engineering works in history. Hoover Dam, built during the Great Depression, drew men desperate for work to a remote and rugged canyon near Las Vegas. There they struggled against brutal heat, choking dust and perilous heights to build a colossus of concrete that brought electricity and water to millions, transforming the American Southwest.
1940: Native Son by Richard Wright is published
1956: Autherine Lucy, first African-American student at University of Alabama, is [align:right]permanently expelled "for her own safety" Recently we've had a discussion here about how far we've come as a nation in the past fifty years or so in overcoming racism. Click on the picture for another example.
1961: Peace Corps established
[img:left]http://southasia.oneworld.net/ImageCatalog/landmine-victim-1.jpg[/img]
1999: The "Ottawa Convention" banning manufacture, sale, and distribution of anti-personnel mines goes into effect
In December 1997 a total of 122 governments signed the treaty in Ottawa, Canada - hence the name. The treaty became binding under international law more quickly than any treaty of its kind in history. 156 nations have now ratified the treaty, unfortunately not including the US.
In the News Six Years Ago Today: Suspected 9/11 mastermind Khalid Shaikh Mohammed allegedly arrested[img:left]http://www.milnet.com/afi/Khalid-Shaikh-Mohammed.jpg[/img]The news of his capture was widely reported and heralded on this date. Porter Goss (R), chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, even proclaimed, "This is equal to the liberation of Paris in the second World War." But MSNBC reported that "Some analysts questioned whether Mohammed was actually arrested [on March 1], speculating that he may have been held for some time and that the news was made public when it was in the interests of the United States and Pakistan." Five Years Ago Today:[img:right]http://www.expoupdate.com/aristide2.jpg[/img]Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristede reportedly overthrown and kidnapped by US agents [align:center]In February, a newly-organized rebel group began to overrun the Haitian countryside, ostensibly with the aid of the US. In very short order they were threatening the capital. Aristide was whisked away to exile in the Central African Republic. To this day he claims to be the rightful leader of Haiti. Many in Haiti agree.
Four Years Ago Today:Supreme Court rules against capital punishment for juveniles[img:left]http://img.slate.com/medi...91/050301_Juris_ChristopherSim.jpg[/img] [align:center]In Roper v Simmons, the Court ruled 5-4 that executing a person who commits a crime before reaching the age of 18 amounts to "cruel and unusual punishment". In his dissenting opinion, Justice Antonin Scalia scoffed at the majority's interpretation of a "national consensus", arguing that the only pertinent matter was that such punishment would not have been considered "cruel and unusual" at the time the Constitution was ratified.
Last Year: Israel carries out "Operation Hot Winter" in Gaza[img:right]http://4.bp.blogspot.com...fxAJgHso9Cs/s400/1_772221_1_34.jpg[/img] [align:center]After the US and Israel backed a botched coup in Gaza in 2007, tensions grew as Israel imposed a blockade and embargo on Gaza, and Hamas defiantly continued firing crude rockets into the Negev Desert. Israel's assault on Gaza came in retaliation for Hamas rockets having reached the city of Ashkelon. This day was remembered as "Gaza's bloodiest day" until December 27, when Israel launched "Operation Cast Lead".

Somewhere Out Yonder: [img:left]http://imgsrc.hubblesite.org/hu/db/images/hs-2005-09-a-web.jpg[/img]The irregular galaxy NGC 1427A is hurtling towards its disintegration at a speed of about 400 miles per second. Under the gravitational grasp of a large gang of galaxies, called the Fornax cluster, the small bluish galaxy is plunging headlong into the group. Within a mere billion years, it will be torn apart and rendered indistinguishable from the surrounding galaxies.
Have a great day, everyone!

Nice opener, btw.

Beautiful Professor Stereoman I'm on Harry right now (how could I not check him first? He's delicious!). David Niven is next (sorry in case it's a dancing thing doncha know). That opening picture is gorgeous. I look forward to going through them all, Steve. Thank you for such a nice start to the day. It hasn't started snowing yet. Oh Mellow, I know I know. But we're just whimpy sutherners and don't cotton too well to this sort of stuff. I'm off to spiff up the temple to get for the big sad doins. See y'all later. Olyve oh no it was Burning Spear next! wow

You da man, Steve!
Snow? Well, I am in Palm Springs and we have snow! Yeah, can you believe it?
Oh, its 8,000 feet above us, and it is beautiful. Mid eighties today both out here and in Los Angeles. Love these crystal clear warm days of early spring.

A strange and beautiful blustery day here, the leaves are falling and blowing around in the gusts, a spattering of rain here and there but still warm and muggy. Spring is a wonderful and mysterious thing. Great intro Steve!

I'm so glad everyone is enjoying the opener! I tell you, I had a great time putting it together. The snow just started falling here, great big fat flakes, and the air is so still you can hear each flake hit the ground. I love it! Over the past decade or so, the climate has shifted in our part of the world so that the areas hardest hit by the typical winter storm originating in the Gulf States - the kind that bring us the heaviest snow - has shifted to the east of us. This storm is no exception. We're slated to get 3 or 4 inches. Greensboro, 150 miles to the east of us, is expecting twice that much. Even Raleigh, where it used to never snow, is going to get a few inches. Note the jealousy.

like Phil, I am enjoying a beautiful day. It is in the mid-eighties, and I can see the snow capped mountains in the distance. The blue skies and soft breeze called and Mr. Scoutgal and I took our three doggies on a lovely walk. We are now having carbe asada tacos on the patio for lunch, while watching basketball and the Dodger game at their new Spring Training complex in Arizona!
