1566: Henry, Count of Bréderode, leads the Compromise of Nobles.

A procession of Dutch nobility presented a petition to Margaret of Parma, regent of ruler Philip II of Spain, to relax the repressive "placards" ruling Protestantism to be a capital offense.

Count Henry and many of his compatriots subsequently fled to escape the barbarous invasion of Count Fernando of Alba. Henry died in exile in 1568.

Not all were so fortunate!

1614: Pocahontas marries John Rolfe

She converted to Christianity, was christened "Lady Rebecca", and traveled with Rolfe to England, where she became somewhat of a celebrity. She fell ill and died shortly thereafter, at the age of 21.

1722: Dutch Admiral Jacob Roggeveen discovers Easter Islands

[Linked Image from rapanuicentral.com]

So named because the discovery occurred on Easter Sunday, various Europeans abused and enslaved the island's natives, and infected them with smallpox, which nearly wiped out the remaining population. By 1877, only 201 natives remained.

In modern times, the island has become a Chilean national park and a World Heritage site.

1758: Mary Jemison captured by Shawnee

Only fifteen years old at the time, Mary adopted a native lifestyle, raised nine children by two husbands, and brought her people to possession of great land holdings. She died at the age of 90, revered by natives as well as Europeans.

1930: Mahatma Gandhi picked up a lump of salt from the shores of Dandi, India

Thus began one of the most massive acts of civil disobedience in human history, as thousands of satyagrahis ("activists of truth and resolution") followed suit. Over 80,000 were eventually jailed for defying the British monopoly over salt production and distribution.

1972: Harrisburg Seven case ends in mistrial

[Linked Image from peacebuttons.info]
Father Philip Berrigan, who was at the time in prison, five other Catholic clergy, and a Pakistani journalist were charged with conspiracy to kidnap Henry Kissinger and to blow up ventilation tunnels under Buckness University. Defense Attorney Ramsey Clark employed the unusual tactic of not calling any witnesses, and pioneered the process of "scientific" jury selection in the trial.

1973: US military involvement in Vietnam ends with the withdrawal of the 615th MP Company

1992: March for Women's Lives
[Linked Image from peacebuttons.info]
One of the largest protests ever in the nation's capital, the March for Women’s Lives, in support of women's reproductive rights and equality, drew several hundred thousand people to Washington, D.C. The pro-choice rally occurred as the U.S. Supreme Court was about to consider the constitutionality of a Pennsylvania law that limited access to abortions.

1997: Allen Ginsberg dies

Along with Lawrence Ferlighetti, Ginsberg was an icon of the "beat poets". He shocked the American literary scene in 1956 with the publication of his poem Howl. He continued to be a leading voice for new ways of thinking and expressing thoughts until his death.

Somewhere Out Yonder:

The Cat’s Eye Nebula consists of glowing gases ejected into outer space by a dying star. After a star has used up all its nuclear fuel, it throws off its outer layers and fades away.[img:left]http://img.photobucket.co...20out%20yonder/12catseyenebula.jpg[/img]The Cat's Eye Nebula, one of the first planetary nebulae discovered, also has one of the most complex forms known to this kind of nebula. Eleven rings, or shells, of gas make up the Cat's Eye. Individual chemical elements in the nebula emit light at very specific wavelengths.

Planetary nebulae were so named over a century ago because through the small telescopes of the day, they resembled planets.

Have a great day, everyone!

Morning, Steve -- and many thanks for the Ginsberg clip. Also the Spencer Tracy; he has always been a favorite of mine.

The weatherman was rigth; there is snow on the ground and more coming down. I don't think there will be much when it's all over, but isn't it getting a little late in the year for this??

COINCIDENCE? I think NOT!

FROM THE CHURCH OF INEFFABLE STUPIDITY:

a) Norm Coleman
"I know it's not damaging the party because I don't hear that. But I do think Norm is a very sensitive, thoughtful person and whatever Norm is doing I'm sure he believes is exactly the right thing to do and I support that."

The above captioned load of excrement was brought to you by Senatwhore Bob Corker (R) in response to complaints that Coleman
a) went back on his word to allow the recount to be the final word
b) promises to appeal to the US Supremes
c) hired a team of election attorneys so putrid and unreliable, that the court was laughing at their arguments (between sanctions)
d) is making Minnesota the laughing stock of America (after Florida, and due to, in great part, superb help from Michelle Bachmann)

For a party that claims to own family values, the hypocrisy is stunning. Their last flock of presidential candidates more than doubled the number of ex-spouses, compared to their opponents. This is the party that welcomed Tom Foley back with applause, which claims that Ted Stevens is a hero, that proclaims a bombastic, racist, drug-abusing bigot as its leader, and that greeted another senator back with a standing ovation, after revelations that the family values senator frequently visited whores while he was dressed in diapers.

If your stomach can handle it, here is the collection of more GOPisms regarding their current hero, Norm Coleman:

b) Larry Summers - the world's smartest idiot, or merely a crook on the take?

It really is no surprise. Barack Obama had to strike out a few times. One of the worst decisions he has made was to put the economy in the hands of the crooks who created the mess, Larry Summer and Robert Rubin. They also greatly profited from their mess. Summers received 5.2 MILLION from his hedge fund last year. That same year, he made another 2.7 MILLION simply from talking to the financial industry, when it was public knowledge that he had the key role in the economic decision-making of Obama. $45,000 from Merrill Lynch just in November, and $135,000 from Goldman Sachs, just to talk to companies that he greatly rewarded once Obama was sworn in.

The three musketeers, the men who deliberately de-regulated our financial industry, and who stopped the one most important effort to correct that error are:
Alan Greenspan
Robert Rubin
Larry Summers

This article should scare the pants off you, especially since the well-bribed Summers now controls our economy - and which of his Wall Street fiends gets more taxpayer assistance, and on what terms.

This is not simply a case of of a fox guarding a henhouse. This is more like giving Al Capone a well armed army to protect his distilleries, while providing him with free transportation for his goods.

Another must read is Glenn Greenwald's article in Salon:

c) A Brave New World
Quote
Two women serve in Israel's new Cabinet, but some Israelis would rather not see them.

Newspapers aimed at ultra-Orthodox Jewish readers tampered with the inaugural photograph of the Cabinet, erasing ministers Limor Livnat and Sofa Landver.
Ultra-Orthodox newspapers consider it immodest to print images of women.

The daily Yated Neeman digitally changed the photo, moving two male ministers into the places formerly occupied by the women.
The weekly Shaa Tova simply blacked the women out, in a photo reprinted Friday by the mainstream daily Maariv.

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2009/04/03/international/i020120D29.DTL

Airbrushing out reality is just so, well, fundementalist. Funny how those idiots in Israel are no different at heart than the Muslim fundies, or our Christian fundies who seek to control the rest of us with their perverse religious rules.

Ultra conservative religions, regardless of which faith they spew, pose the same danger to world. Their belief systems crowd out rational thinking, they force illogical and deadly policies upon their governments, and they often lead to clashes, frequently violent ones. Here in the states, Planned Parenthood centers are bombed, and their doctors threatened and killed. In Afghanistan, the legal rape of wives was barely reversed, after a global outcry. In Darfur, religion kills and rapes. In Israel, ultra-conservatives (including those elected to office) want to exterminate Palestinians off the face of the earth.

- - -

d) American society

Have we become so used to violence that the obvious flaws in our society now seem to be the norm?

A gun lover, fearing that Obama will take away his AK 47s, shot three police to death.
Chicago public schools lost their 31st student to gunfire this term.
A man went crazy and killed 14 people at a New York civic center.
Another man went to his church and killed three.
Another man . . . .

The whole list is too difficult to write. What makes it worse is when you have obese assholes like Rush Limbaugh stoking fears, proclaiming falsehoods, and pushing the most idiotic and demented of his listeners (in other words, approximately 89.77% of them) into taking violent action against the president and his liberal & moderate supporters. If one liberal writer or talking head had just once promoted violence, the country would (and should) be up in arms in protest. Yet when Rush, Sean, Newt, Billo, Michelle, Anne, and other blithering idiots press their rabid attack dog followers to do the same, the silence from MSM is stunning.

Our society is in grave danger, and violence from within is one of the biggest problems. Does our Second Amendment take into account the danger that guns in the hands of neocon morons pose? I think not.

Sheesh. The new CEO of GM just told America that GM's reputation for lousy quality is a problem of perception.

The maker of the Hummer? The maker of trucks where handles and seat controls fall off without reason? The maker of vehicles that turn off consumers because of REAL FLAWS, not simply perception?

Perhaps Chapter 11 is the best way to go, after all.

Oh, silly Pastor Ag. Of course it's a matter of perception. Those of us who have driven cars of certain foreign make (beginning with Honda and Toyota and moving on from there) have developed the perception that inexpensive, reliable, and at least marginally efficient cars are to be desired.

This perception is a real problem for GM.

Why does this surprise you? grin

Mell, I am easily surprised.

But for the CEO not to even admit that perception may have some ground in reality, I suspect that GM continues to miss the boat.

Morning everybody!
Out late, up late. Good show last night though.

Beautiful Steve. I've much to look forward to reading. In the meantime special nod to Gregory Peck laugh and Spencer Tracey too laugh . Two of my very favorites.

Another warm day here before another quick little freeze tonight making me stick my plants back inside for a day or two.
Spring warm is trying to make it through though.
It's beautiful here.

I'm off to the gym now.
Passover is upon me. Starting tonight getting ready for it.

Six gay men were shot dead by members of their tribe in two separate incidents in the past 10 days, an official with Iraq's Interior ministry said.

In the most recent attack, two men were killed Thursday in Sadr City area of Baghdad after they were disowned by relatives, the official said.

The shootings came after a tribal meeting was held and the members decided to go after the victims.

On March 26, four additional men were fatally shot in the same city, the official said, adding that the victims had also been disowned by their relatives.

The official declined to be identified because he is not authorized to speak to the media.

I'm HOME! and after being in all parts of Maryland, all I have to say is "If heaven ain't a lot like Dixie,
I don't want to go! You can send me to hell
or Silver Spring Md.,
it'd be about the same to me!

I've promised my carpool boys that I will not wander again until the end of this school year.

I didn't find out until today that the BIG DANCE will finalize between North Carolina and Michigan State. Whoo Haa, that should be a great game. I can't wait!

We were at the Baltimore Washington Airport this morning about 7:30 to catch our plane. My roommate for the last week, Sally, doesn't drink and doesn't think too kindly of those who do. I was ahead of her going to our gate when suddenly and without warning I spied clips in the sport bar of the basketball games from yesterday. Of course I had to stop and watch. Sally, who knows I like a beer every now and then, AND HAD NOT HAD ANY ALCOHOL ALL WEEK, pulled up beside me and asked me what I was ordering . AT 7:30 IN THE MORNING! I had to laugh at that!

We had a great time all in all.

The baby Charlotte is perfect. Pictures to follow tomorrow. I enjoyed John and Heather so very much. John REALLY is my son in every way but birth. I thought about how many memories he shares with me and my children. Heather is so perfect for him. I am so blessed. And Sally seems perfectly happy that I share John with her!!!

We traveled into DC yesterday because I asked. I had never seen the cherry blossoms during the festival. Now in Newport News, last week, they were at their peak and the wandering drive into the Omni Hotel where we stayed was a cascade of color.

Actually it rained Thursday and thus the cherry blossoms in DC had already peaked by yesterday. I'll tell you I have never seen so many people in my life. I was sorry I had asked John to get in all that mess.

My Finley dog is happy to see me. He's sitting at my side wondering when his "mama" is going to pile up on the bed and give him some attention!

Have a great rest of the day -- I know, I know, you are all out enjoying this beautiful weather.

Scout, who won the Dodgers' game?

Kathy
