As stated on another thread, I love the old, dark stuff. We'll see how the Mormons handle it:
I think I loved it because, as a child, I had no clue what it was about. That, and it seemed that its 12th-century authors were aiming directly for a chronically-depressed 20th-century grade school child...
"O come, O come, Emmanuel And ransom captive Israel That mourns in lonely exile here Until the Son of God appear Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel.
O come, Thou Rod of Jesse, free Thine own from Satan's tyranny From depths of Hell Thy people save And give them victory o'er the grave Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel.
O come, Thou Day-Spring, come and cheer Our spirits by Thine advent here Disperse the gloomy clouds of night And death's dark shadows put to flight. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel."
Scout, thanks for "Carol of the Bells" - it always reminds me of a wonderful high school teacher I had - Merry Christmas, Mr. Beetley!
As for Christmas carols, I dislike most of them except maybe "I'll be Home for Christmas."
I really don't celebrate Christmas any more; it's a Christian holiday meant for families, and I am a non-Christian whose family has spread pretty far. But that doesn't mean I don't appreciate the art, the architecture, and the music.
And the cookies. Merry Christmas, Olyve, Mr Olyve, and all friends here.
