This thing has now been going on for some time and it just gets more and more interesting. For instance, Halliburton, of Iraq fame, was responsible evidently, for blowing up the rig (they were in charge of 'cementing' which was being done when it blew up). Obama tells us that BP will be held responsible for ALL related expenses, BP says that they are kinda responsible. Now the government is offering 4% loans to folks who are effected (banks, on the other hand, get 0% 'loans' from the fed (kinda puts things into perspective?)).

Evidently our government had setup a bureaucracy/agency to exclusively regulate the oil industry doing this stuff. When it all started the head went on vacation. Then the newsies started to examine this stellar group of regulators. Seems that they saw their job as NOT regulating ANYTHING! The oil companies asked them to give them passes on regulations, and our stellar group of regulators thought that was an absolutely great idea and duly complied with those requests.

I know, this is posted under the environment. I think its safe to say that when the oil gets to land its going to be a serious disaster. I am not sure there is much else to say on that front. All in all this is a disaster on so many levels that one is hard pressed to even document them. BP screwed up, gov screwed up, EVERYBODY screwed up and, now, I am absolutely sure, WE are going to be left, yet again, holding the bag.

There will, I am sure, going to be those who point out the stellar safety record of the oil industry. There will be others who will argue that point. My point is, however, that this need not have happened and, I believe, would not have, if gov had simply done the job they were/are being paid to do.

What is this cap thing?

The act also lays out a liability scheme; under the act, BP is responsible for $75 million in damages, though the law allows “unlimited” liability in certain situations, like a finding that the defendants was “grossly negligent” or violated other federal laws.

Only $75 million? On Monday, two Democratic senators introduced legislation to raise the $75 million cap to $10 billion. The bill also proposes that claimants would be able to collect damages from future revenues for the fund, with interest, if damages exceed the $1.6 billion held by the trust fund.

That's what I say...Only 75 million? That's nothing! And how hard is it going to be to prove that BP was "grossly negligent"?

I think they have done the job they were paid to do. Just depends on who we think is actually paying them.

It's all working out quite well, one must concede.

I watched the congressional hearing wherein the principals of BP, Halliburton and Transocean blithely blamed one another for everything. BP, however was stellar. they admitted that their claim of their ability to deal with a disaster was a damned lie, that they failed to observe even basic industry standards of safety, they lied about the size of the problem, etc. I was also absolutely impressed with the courtesy the congressional inquisitors showed this merry band of (as far as I could tell); liars, greedy jerks, incompetents, and damned fools.

Perhaps this courtesy has something to do with appreciation one shows toward them that brought you to the party?

SPILL? The White House and media forced BP to release this video of the "spill." That ain't no spill, that's a gusher.

Gulf Coast oil disaster photos- check them out. I heard that 8" tar balls are washing up on the LA shoreline now.

BP should change their name back to:

GULF OIL!!!

They had defective valve with dead battery in the control module.

How many more have them too?

I doubt if I'd be shown anything like that much courtesy if I dumped a few gallons of crude oil on the white house steps.
