This is good news. iPhone jailbreaking (and all cell phone unlocking) made legal Jailbreaking — the practice of unlocking a phone (and particularly an iPhone) so it can be used on another network and/or run other applications than those approved by Apple — has technically been illegal for years. However, no one has been sued or prosecuted for the practice. (Apple does seriously frown on the practice, and jailbreaking your phone will still void your warranty.) It’s estimated that more than a million iPhone owners have jailbroken their handsets.
(snip)
The upshot is that now anyone can jailbreak or otherwise unlock any cell phone without fear of legal penalties, whether you want to install unsupported applications or switch to another cellular carrier. Cell phone companies are of course still free to make it difficult for you to do this — and your warranty will probably still be voided if you do — but at least you won’t be fined or imprisoned if you jailbreak a handset. The number one reason that I have not bought an iPhone or any other "smart" phone is that I do not want to be forced into buying a two-year subscription with ATT, Verizon or some other provider. Imagine if you could only buy a television if you were required to watch only CBS.... or (shudder) Fox. It is that absurd!

Or buy a satellite dish and only use DirecTV or move into a house and have the option of only one cable service and only one local phone company!

That pretty much describes our situation out here in the country. Have recently been watching Hulu. Plan to watch a whole lot more free video as I can find it

I think hulu was going to offer a monthly subscription plan for "more" content. Not being a user of hulu, I'm not sure what the "more" would be, but it doesn't seem to effect regular hulu programming.

Why people 'jailbreak' their iPhones But what does that mean? And why do people jailbreak phones?
The simple answer is this: To gain more control.
Some mobile phones, particularly the iPhone, come with restrictions on what types of apps -- or programs -- you can purchase and run, which cellular network you can use and, essentially, what you can do with the phone.
Jailbreaking the iPhone allows you to shop for apps anywhere on the internet, not just the iTunes App Store, where all of the apps must be approved by Apple to go on sale.
There are several types of apps that Apple apparently won't approve, and you can find many of these in a sort of black market (now legal) app store for jail breakers, called Cydia.

As with many other online sites, you can get some stuff free and more stuff with a subscription. Hulu Plus
