An interesting article Is Portugal's Liberal Drug Policy a Model for US? aol news Within that article, and slightly off topic I found Last week, former Mexican President Vicente Fox criticized his country's military-led, U.S.-backed war on drugs, which has left more than 28,000 people dead since December 2006. Instead, Fox said Mexico should consider legalizing the production, distribution and sale of drugs.
"Legalizing in this sense doesn't mean that drugs are good or don't hurt those who consume. Rather, we have to see it as a strategy to strike and break the economic structure that allows the mafias to generate huge profits in their business," Fox wrote on his blog. My first reaction was being shocked at the idea.... On the other hand, for better or worse our nation has done essentially the same thing with guns.... which are then illegally imported into Mexico. We feel that those guns are their problem. And, I suppose that if Mexico were to legalize drugs... they could equally well say that any drugs that happen to come over our border are none of their concern.

I have to agree with Portugal. The Drug War isn't working any better than Prohibition did-since to makes crooks rich.

U.S.-backed war on drugs, which has left more than 28,000 people dead since December 2006. WHOA! What the F? The US is backing the slaughter of 7000 "Criminals" a year in Mexico? No wonder people are struggling to get the hell outa there! Their own military has leveled it's guns on them and killing them by the score! That's uh.....7K divided by 365...is uh.. *counts on fingers* 19.178082191780821917808219178082 people killed every day! That's 2.337228714524207011686143572621 World Trade Centers every year since 2006????? I'd say it's way past time to change tactics against the people who supply America's Habit!

My partner and I are attempting to kick off a campaign to do a documentary on the failed war on drugs. "Think For A Moment" We already have several members of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition and my partner has already shot a promo teaser. We've engaged IndieGoGo to raise funding, wish us luck!

' I have to agree with Portugal. The Drug War isn't working any better than Prohibition did--since it makes crooks rich. And that is why the USA will not reform its drug laws. The drug mafia is powerful and rich, and it has its lobbyists in Washington and backers in the financial community. They are not going to lose their monopoly to print money. Those who held property in China fought for a quarter-century to prevent the USA from recognizing Communist China. Those who held property in Cuba are still powerful enough to prevent the recognition of the government of Cuba. The drug mafia, from the CIA and the great New York banks on down, have even more power to protect their money-making interests.

Well, see, if we end the "War on Drugs", then police departments around the country will become poorer and have no use for all their nifty "drug-busting toys".

The United States will never end its war on drugs. Mexico might legalize drugs, should legalize drugs, but it can't happen here. For one reason or another the smaller government crowd has lots of exceptions to the smaller government rules and regulations they endorse. They don't want the government interfering with their lives, but they don't have a problem with the government interfering with other peoples lives. Quite a conundrum.

I suspect I have weighed in on our war on drugs several times. Its unlikely to go away because it provides a LOT of jobs, is supported by the religious right, has a budget of over 15 BILLION a year, and is a fav of a lot of sitting elected. For folks really interested in the subject I would suggest http://www.drugpolicy.org/homepage.cfm. This outfit has been around for a long time, has some serious people on its board (members of the Reagan administration, NYC police commissioner, federal judges, etc). They have documented the failures of the war on drugs for years - just makes no difference. One instance of just how bad it is. Congress actually passed a law, several years ago, which said that local law enforcement could take property from people if they SUSPECT drug involvement. Then congress made the rule that local law enforcement need not account for that which they took! This cleverly saved local law enforcement from being bribed as they could now it all themselves! This law continues, law enforcement can take your property on suspicion and its up to you to prove you are not guilty! When it comes to the war on drugs the constitution is just another myth.
