Zemco Industries in Buffalo, New York, has recalled approximately 380,000 pounds of deli meat that may be contaminated with bacteria that can cause a potentially fatal disease, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Monday.
The products were distributed to Wal-Marts nationwide, according to the USDA's website . http://www.cnn.com/2010/US/08/24/meat.recall/index.html?iref=NS1

Garden Toad, you want food recalls? I get a list emailed to me every few days. Ready, or not, here you go: - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration yesterday issued an update on the nationwide recall of frozen mamey fruit pulp for Salmonella Typhi contamination yesterday, adding a second company's frozen mamey pulp product
- Another Iowa producer Friday recalled a massive amount of eggs--this latest recall is for 170 million eggs sold under several brand names in at least 14 states.
- Two companies recalled pistachios for potential Salmonella contamination this week. AustiNuts Wholesale, Inc., of Manor, Texas, recalled its pistachio kernel products and GloryBee Foods, Inc., of Eugene, Oregon, recalled its Aunt Patty's brand 5 pound bags of Whole Raw Pistachios and 25 pound boxes of Specialty Commodities brand Whole Raw Pistachios Kernels after the companies' supplier, California Delights, Inc., recalled 2 shipments of pistachio kernels for possible Salmonella contamination.
- The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets announced this week that Snow White Food Products of Brooklyn, NY, was recalling alfalfa sprouts for potential Salmonella contamination.
- In an Aug. 13 warning letter to Juice Pac Inc., the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said the juice processing facility must achieve the 5-log reduction in microorganisms in its juice concentrates. A "5-log reduction" means lowering the number of microorganisms by 100,000-fold, meaning if a surface has 100,000 pathogenic microbes on it, a 5-log reduction would reduce the number of microorganisms to one.
...and a major NorCal grocer is being sued because a meat merchandiser instructed an hourly to sell dungeness crabs "until they smell." Said employee reported the merchandiser and the grocer to the FDA and was terminated. (You can't make this stuff up!)

All I knew about was the meat and eggs. I posted this because I really don't trust Walmart to pull it. They were real slow about pulling the toxic children's jewelry untill about a week after it was in the news.

All I knew about was the meat and eggs. This is why farmer's markets are a good place to buy your food. You know exactly who you are buying from. You wouldn''t know about the other recalls unless you're in the biz. The point is, every, single, day, there are food recalls in America. I've applied for both USDA inspector position and FSIS inspector positions - and I've not heard anything regarding either position. ...but we can send Pakistan $59b in aid, pre-flood.

Lets see, now. Over the last two years we seem to have a regular pattern of food recalls (meat, lettuce, eggs, whatever). One would think that gov would figure out that its a bad thing to have a food supply at risk but, nope, the regulators don't have enough money to regulate (but billions for bankers). Problems with the food supply are known, recognized, and completely ignored. On the other hand politicians, in their wisdom, are more concerned with really important things like Muslim social halls, making sure that folks with more than 250,000.00 net profit don't get their taxes raised something like 2%, spewing all sorts of hate (the right), actively ignoring all sorts of hate (the left), fighting wars, etc. One would think that SOMEBODY would actually give a damn!
I, obviously, have my priorities all screwed up and simply do not understand, unlike our 'leaders', the important of distractions over necessity. I am not personally convinced that government by clown is really a good thing.

If consumers are purchasing lunch meats with caramel coloring in the first place, well...
Complete list of Wal*Mart recalled deli meats:-- 25.5-pound cases of "Marketside Grab and Go Sandwiches BLACK FOREST HAM With Natural Juices Coated with Caramel Color" with the number 17800 1300. -- 28.49-pound cases of "Marketside Grab and Go Sandwiches HOT HAM, HARD SALAMI, PEPPERONI, SANDWICH PEPPERS" with the number 17803 1300. -- 32.67-pound cases of "Marketside Grab and Go Sandwiches VIRGINIA BRAND HAM With Natural Juices, MADE IN NEW YORK, FULLY COOKED BACON, SANDWICH PICKLES, SANDWICH PEPPERS" with the number 17804 1300. -- 25.5-pound cases of "Marketside Grab and Go Sandwiches ANGUS ROAST BEEF Coated with Caramel Color" with the number 17805 1300. The meats were produced on dates ranging from June 18 to July 2, 2010. The "Use By" dates range from August 20 to September 10, 2010. Processing date: June 18 2010; use-by date August 20th, 2010. 62 day shelf-life. Nice. Sounds yummy.

This sounds like cases of prepared sandwiches, probably frozen, Rick, not just deli meat...
For the most part, I think, it behooves food producers to do their level best not to distribute contaminated food. It's gotta hit them in the pocketbook pretty hard when a million pound recall occurs. American business doesn't care much about you but really hates to get hit in the pocketbook. If lunchmeat from Walmart sends me to the hospital(not that I would eat lunchmeat from Walmart) Then you can pretty much bet your ass I'll never buy it from them again.
Good coffee, good weed, and time on my hands...

We shall see... ...Safeway is being sued right now for retaliation against an hourly for notifying the FDA that his corporate mid-level management meat merchandiser ordered him to sell dungeness crabs "until they smell" - long past its shelf-life. Sell till it smells! Nice Safeway!
