I think the U.S. should take the narco fight there, instead of fighting them here. Since the United States is the purchaser of the drugs and the United States is the supplier of the weapons, seems like the battle ought to be right here on our own soil. EmmaG

As I wrote earlier in this thread, we will hear, "It's America's fault". By the way, I know of now official policy wherein the United States purchases the drugs from the cartels. But, I can see a couple of ways that may be a win-win for both the citizens of Mexico and the citizens of the US. Mexico could legalize and recognize the right to the private ownership and use of firearms by Mexicans, thus eliminating the gun smuggling that is going on. I mean, why would they fear the Mexican citizen being armed? Or, we could cut a deal where for every 5,000 illegal aliens the Mexican government verifiably prevents from sneaking into the US, US border customs folks could prevent one firearm from entering Mexico. See? Win-win.:-) Yours, Issodhos

Reducing the profit motive will have a corresponding effect on both the corruption and violence. Absolutely correct, Joe. Legalize, regulate and TAX recreational drugs. Allow people in the US to grow marijuana for their own consumption. Allow foreign producers to import their products via regular import channels and pay appropriate import tariffs. There's an interesting discussion going on here. Way out of Economic Crisis: Legalize Drugs
Nothing would bring an end to the economic crisis quicker than legalizing drugs and bringing that income into the tax base. States and cities could save enormous amounts of money that are currently being funneled to law enforcement and incarceration. Take all the billions that are being made by narco-traffickers and tax it at the same level as cigarettes. Give the power to the doctors to prescribe the harder drugs like cocaine and heroin, like Sweden is doing with its heroin program, with controlled doses dispensed on premise. Create marijuana and hash cafes similar to Holland's, a country that does not have a drug problem near the scale that the US does. Jobs would be created at all levels, not the least of which maybe more doctors would enter the work force. With more doctors on board, it could pave the way for universal health care. A bit perhaps, but legalization would also go a long way to solve narco/crime issues along our border with our southern neighbor.

More than 6,000 people have been brutally murdered in Mexico in the past year, due in part to our insatiable need for drugs and guns. I did not say that it was the fault of the United States. However, while some may cavalierly bring in side issues such as multiculturalism or immigration, perhaps in an attempt to sound like they know what they are talking about or maybe just trying to be cute, they cannot deny the United States' very clear collusion in this and yet at the same time have delusions that we can ride in and save the day. My son and his wife live in northeastern Mexico, not on the border, but a good four hours south. Although the city they live in has only been "mildly" touched by the violence (20 bodies, including that of a 16-year-old boy were dug up a few weeks ago outside of town), it is still affecting their lives daily. My son posted Exhibition Postponed on Saturday.

...the weapons the drug cartels are using -- grenades, automatic weapons, etc -- are being purchased in the United States. We can thank the "librul" NRA and their "gun shows" for this! ![[Linked Image from i48.photobucket.com]](http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/ca_rickf/Smilies/angryfire.gif)

...the United States' very clear collusion in this and yet at the same time have delusions that we can ride in and save the day. The United States needs to own up to its part in this problem and help deal with this hand-and-hand with the Mexican government - provided the Mexican government is not corrupt - which it is. So, what's the solution? Go it alone? Mexico is so out-of-control, Mexico's corrupt government and drug cartel is way more dangerous to us Americans than al-Queda and Taliban hiding in caves in Pakistan. I don't understand why the U.S. government doesn't see this and act upon it.

A bill was introduced in the California legislature to legalize and tax pot. There are Mexican nationals growing pot in Mendicino and Humboldt counties for Pete's Sake. The U.S. Marshalls leave the American growers alone - they want the Mexican growers as they are heavily armed and dangerous. Pot is the least of the problems. The major problem is crystal meth and cocaine from Mexico.

Recreational drug use will never go away. Recreational drug use needs to be dealt with in a logical, rational way and to take out the criminal element associated with recrational drugs and its sale.
...at the root of all of this "evil" is money - what a surprise.
We Americans are getting hit from both sides of the spectrum: From greedy Wall Street types to greedy thug narco dealers.
Greed, greed, greed, money, money, money.
Pathetic! These people need to go out and a "real" jobs.

rick, you are right. It is out of control there. People have stopped leaving their houses. You can't call the police. You can't trust anyone. They are killing mayors, governors, chiefs of police. Everyone is afraid.
Google "Plan Merida." Bush cut a deal with Calderon, $1.5 billion for guns and weapons to fight the cartels...using private contractors.
I suppose we could send troops or the CIA in to hunt down the drug lords one by one like they did Pablo Escobar in Colombia. But Mexico is a damned big country.
I do not know the answer.
