I was thinking on the penchant for gov to throw everybody into prison at, I think, something like 75 grand a year per prisoner. This seems kinda expensive and I have some alternatives.... Why not "off-shore" them? It would be cheaper and we wouldn't really have to worry. And I guess escape would not really be possible. Actually, I do like the idea, especially for repeat and violent offenders. Life imprisonment in Siberia... perhaps even a worse punishment than the death penalty.

I'm sure Siberia would be up for that. Heck, they'd probably do it for free. "Hi, we're going to drop off the worst of our citizens somewhere the Siberian backwoods. No, we're not going to pay rent; in fact, we're not going to feed, clothe, or house them, so you'll want to keep your eyes open if any of them survive."

I can only really talk about the Texas judicial system. Texas has a judicial system? Who effin knew? Are you sure about that Austin? All the times I've been there and with blood kin and all living there generations no one has ever suggested the existence of a Texas judicial system. Maybe in my younger days I was just lucky as hell in Texas, not getting killed or caught. Death by O.D.! LOL!

Mick, Texas isn't unique. It's the same wherever you go. The mission is to put everyone in the "electronic plantation." Based on the population % incarcerated in the USA, they're achieving this goal. Not getting killed in Florida is more a matter of discernment than luck. Joe

Texas is the only state that I know of that if your driving around, get stopped by the police and they check you for guns, assault rifles, assassin knives...things like that. Now here's the catch... If you don't have any in your posession, then they drive you to the nearest police substation, go to the property room and issue you all of the basic necessities that you would need to navigate around town. So the moral of the story is...don't leave home without your AK47 and Glock.

One last thought. I forgot one other alternative to imprisonment - BOND SLAVERY! This worked for hundreds of years. There are some who would even argue that its one of the institutions which contributed to the founding of the country!
For those of you who are not familiar with the concept. When a criminal is convicted of a crime it may be that there are others willing to bid on services that the criminal might perform for them. The bidder agrees to house, feed, and almost care for the miscreant. The miscreant can then be forced to do whatever labor the winning bidder might demand for as long as the sentence is.
Think on it, you might be able to hire your very own accountant (chef, house keeper, baby sitter, driver, whatever), to do your every bidding, for simply paying the bid price and then housing and feeding him/her. There are LOTS of opportunities here. In addition, the state wins by cashing in on the bid process itself.
Just a late thought.........

We could save a very large fraction of our prison costs by moving all the drug convicts into alternative institutions. We could even let them chose: Drug rehab followed by a lifetime of monitoring, or residence in a drug-user reservation. Then if they want to grow pot and stay high all day, they don't get to interact with the rest of society. We would just drop off a truckload of beans and rice (and Screaming Yellow Zonkers) every week. Way, way cheaper than the whole War On Drugs with all its police, prisons, guards, DEA, etc.
