Greger, Ms Roberts was born in the same hospital that I was and attended a high school that (if I had been in public school) would have.
She's beautiful and genteel and I know she's got a very sexy personna but it's her down to earthness that I think is sexy.
And pairing up with Lyle if even for a short time also showed class in my opinion because he is a class act.

I've had some time to think about this, and I know exactly why this got to me (although I just came from getting a hair cut, and a few customers there were talking about how badly Ms. Boyd was treated.)

Very simply, if you say "47 years old, graying hair, receding chin, some extra weight, not particularly graceful," you'd be describing Ms. Doyle. But you would also be describing me.

Without the voice, of course.

I'm not saying that we are sisters; we simply share some characteristics (given that voice, I wish we shared more.) But I think there was a part of me that very strongly identified with her. In her place, I would have received the same derisive dismissal. It's a little hard to handle.

Especially as one who is terminally shy to begin with, if there was ever a hope in hell of my overcoming stage fright, it's probably gone now.

While I am sure age and appearance as such played a role in the reaction, remember that young people tend to think that at a certain age you will not, cannot and for some should not make it in show biz. For example, every pop diva over 40 faces it at some point. It is not that the person is viewed as unattractive in the larger sense, but often unattractive to them.

I think that is a significant difference, based upon my insistence in participating in gay dance parties where most everyone else is 20-40. Almost none of them find me attractive, but few find me unattractive. The first involves that ineffable quantity of sexual energy, the latter is broader and more based on personality.

I would agree with you, Phil, except that one of the judges said it very plainly: before she started to sing, the crowd was against her.

It's one thing to be uninterested. It's another to be actively disapproving.
