So whatever was wrong with Lyle Lovett's looks? At least with men I can make some comparison to the way I look and he's a helluva lot better looking than me. His talent is unquestionable. As far as pretty girls singing, I enjoy the music and would like to hop in bed with them. If they aren't so pretty I enjoy the music just as much. After hearing them I might still wanna hop in bed with 'em. But I'm a guy, y'know? every woman at first glance falls into one of two categories, a yes or a maybe. By the same token I am aware that I fall into the 'no' category almost universally among women. I have neither looks nor talent. I'm going to leave for an hour of so to steal a chicken coop so I will let this woman's video download so I can also appreciate this phenomenon.

I wouldn't be too hard on old Snargle, and according to Julia, when it comes to Lyle hanging the moon, the word "hung" apparently figured prominently, so I guess there's the answer to that question.

I wasn't being hard on Snargle, or didn't intend to. it's just a sore spot with me, because I think Lovett is a hell of a musician, but I generally only discuss him with women because Im' not interested in Julia whatsit...Roberts.
I reacted (perhaps overreacted?) to the fact that men can't discuss one without the other. They just can't. Try it sometime.
Fortunately, I think Snargle understood that.
I'd much rather have a Lovett CD than, say, lunch with Julia Roberts. (I truly am circling back to the idea that we should listen to how people listen before we listen to how they look.)

OK I stole the chicken coop, actually a large parrot cage but no such exotic bird is going to live in it now. Susan Boyle's voice is fantastic. What I see most of all that I take exception to is age discrimination. Because she isn't young people think immediately that she can't have talent. She mighta been a real cutie at 25, still quite attractive(figuratively speaking) at 35 and 40. For most of us once you've hit and passed 45 things are starting to head south. I thought she was kinda cute. She carried herself well and walked confidently in heels. Excellent performance and I hope she finds her dream. Back to Lyle Lovett, I know what he looks like, I know how he sounds, Who is Julia Roberts Anyway? Just some chick that married a famous singer. Famous singers always get good looking girls.

I think you have a point there, Greger; I went back and checked plain Paul Potts - the reactions were not as volatile (or else it was filmed/cut differently). He was 37.

There was a bit of show-biz in how the segment was put together, but you couldn't fake the spontaneous reaction of the judges or the impact on the audience. Yes, it is a comment on how image-oriented our society/species is, but it is also a reality. I have often commented on how the internet has reversed the process of meeting someone. We learn about how they think, and write first, here. Then maybe hear them (for example, on the phone) well before we actually see or meet them. In the "real world" we sum people up by their appearance first, then maybe how they interact with others, then by sound and only later by content. What I thought was so powerful about the performance was how the music (a very powerful song) so beautifully blended with the story of the singer - it made it very real. I don't know if that can truly be duplicated by later performances. I dreamed a dream in time gone by When hope was high And life worth living I dreamed that love would never die I dreamed that God would be forgiving Then I was young and unafraid And dreams were made and used and wasted There was no ransom to be paid No song unsung, no wine untasted
But the tigers come at night With their voices soft as thunder As they tear your hope apart And they turn your dream to shame ... I had a dream my life would be So different from this hell I'm living So different now from what it seemed Now life has killed the dream I dreamed. It sums up so eloquently the situation Ms Boyle was in until she came upon the stage.

She blew me away.
I agree with Mellow on the incredibly rude reaction of the audience and the panel a soon as she walked out. And the things they said to her afterwards were horrible! That kind of crap is enough to send someone who was teased and rejected like that as a kid right back into therapy. I wish her the very best.
Mellow, I think you're right about folks overlooking Lyle's talent to couple with Julia Roberts every time his name is mentioned. I think that's too bad too but beyond that I have to stick up for her. In my opinion she's not just a pretty face. For such a beautiful woman, she sure seems down to earth and passionate about her animals and charities.

I want to defend Julia Roberts too... she picked Lyle Lovett because she values talent over beauty. It is others' narrowmindedness that leads them to wonder "how such a beautiful woman would end up with such a homely man."

Miss Olyve, I agree with you absolutely that " she's not just a pretty face. For such a beautiful woman, she sure seems down to earth and passionate about her animals and charities." However, I don't think that truth is particularly relevant as a response to, oh, "have you heard Lyle Lovett's new album?" In her own right she is all of those things. But I wasn't talking about Julia Roberts at all. That's what I was aiming at - not putting her down, just not bringing her into the conversation. Which appears to be impossible when talking with men about...oh, I've been there before .

Yall seem to know a lot more about this Ms. Roberts than I do. Is she an actress? A model? All I ever heard about her was a long time ago when she married Lyle Lovett.
