An old school Liberation Theologist who participated in the famous conference of left-leaning priests in Medellin in 1968, Pantoja believes that religion means taking the god-damned bull by the horns to make the world a less miserable place. He believes it and he lives it, with little interest in attention, accolades, or alliances, personal or otherwise. Asked for a comment for the press by the spokeswoman for the Diocese this week, Pantoja said, "turn your heads toward the immigrants and fix yourself on the historic gaze of this caravan of people reclaiming their rights."
Reading it, I realized that in six years, I'd never heard Pantoja speak in the first person. In six years, I've never heard him say the word "Yo." In six years, I've never heard him complain about a headache or a cold or a sore back. He is a working-man's priest and every Mexican should be proud to call him one of their own. Everyone on this planet should emulate him. wow, Emma. Thank you so much for sharing that with us. I love hearing the story of a person doing true Christian work as I understand it. Those women... to "Las Abejas," the bees, a group of indigenous women in Chiapas involved in social and community work while their husbands and sons were fighting in the jungle during the Zapatista uprising led by Subcommander Marcos....sent a spokesperson here to speak and sell some of their crafts to earn money to feed their children. I've got a beautiful table cloth and dollies hand embroidered.
