Bristol is eighteen. She is now promoting herself as a spokesperson for abstinence only contraception. She has chosen to make herself a public person. She is fair game. A Knight, she never really chose to make herself a public person. It was thrust on her. She's just a kid. A very unfortunate kid. Not a particularly smart kid. Certainly not very worldly. Because the media glommed onto her story and granted her notoriety, she was asked to appear on television, she was asked questions and she answered as she was taught. Just because she's old enough now to be legally taken advantage of does not, in my mind, maker her Fair Game to be publicly smeared because of her views and opinions. This aside, Letterman's joke was aimed directly at a 14 year old because he didn't know which daughter attended a ballgame with her Mom. Are all the children of Sarah Palin doomed to have sexist jokes made about them from now on? are they all fair game because their family doesn't meet your approval or your particular social views? I don't believe children are Fair Game in any shooting match, even young Levi. Who has been pronounced a joke by one of the high and mighty among us. He's just a redneck kid who did what redneck kids do. Who knows, without all the left wing smears and ridiculous publicity forced on them by the Right those two kids might be happily married right now and on the way to making more little republicans. That's something else redneck kids do, they do what they think is right. greger, i take full responsibility for my actions as an 18 year old on forward. really, i take responsibility for my actions as a 17 yr old too but the point is, unless we can all agree that bristol has been brain washed and is under control of her parents voodoo, the young woman does have a mind of her own. that said, me thinks too big a deal is being made of this whole affair. the only two people who are benefiting from this are gov. palin and letterman. they are reaping the publicity points here, regardless of what side of the issue it is coming from. Bingo-when you wrote "brainwashed and under her parebts' control", you hit the nail on the head. She is totally dependent on her mom and dad at this point, especially with a baby to care for.

Excuse me. Levi Johnson went on the Tyra Banks Show and spilled his guts I don't imagine Levi called Tyra and asked for the chance to spill his guts. Quite the other way around, in fact, and they even offered to pay him to do it. Pretty much everybody is fair game to you, Rick, women, children, lesbians, Hispanics, unwed parents, single parents, parents in general, anyone that's down on their luck, anyone who has less than you do. I'm okay with that, why exactly did you bring Levi into this thread anyway? Just because he's fair game so you took a cheap shot at him? Anybody else you'd like to bring into the thread and snipe at? 2wins, Why must we all agree that the kid was brainwashed? She was taught not to have sex until she was ready to have a baby, she still believes this is good advice. Perhaps you encourage your children to have sex as soon as possible but to use birth control, different strokes for different folks eh? Abstinence only works though if you actually abstain. Condoms only work if you use them. No one is scoring any publicity points from our little discussion of this here. Mostly we're talking about whether it's right or wrong for Letterman to make sexually charged jokes about the children of politicians. I think it's wrong, apparently you and others think it's right. The age of the children is really of no importance. greger, i was really being sarcastic. but if we want to get into a discussion on the right approach to sex ed, let's do so on another thread. i think it's a good topic.

It does make sense tho' when one is a poli whose name isn't mentioned on a daily basis, any longer. This is the best "gift" that could have happened to Ms. Palin. She couldn't have paid enough money for this type of free publicity.

At what point does someone become responsible for their actions? At what point is a politiciian no longer allowed to use their children as human shields? Let's give Sarah Palin benefit of the doubt, and say the age is whatever she believes a child can be tried as an adult for a felony in Alaska. That seems fair to me. Wanna bet on that age? There is no way that Letterman thought he was criticising a 14 year old girl. Even after I found out that Bristol wasn't the daughter at the Yankee game, I still though he was referring to Bristol. Palin was on the East Coast, while the Alaska legislature was still struggling to overturn her veto on the stimulus money from the Fed, politiking. Then she traveled to LA to be on a radio show, which is when she criticised Letterman first. June 6, 2009: Palin was in upstate Auburn, NY for an event paid for by SarahPAC June 7, 2009: Palin was at the Yankee game, and then rushed to Long Island to be the honored guest at the Independent Group Home Living Inc's $125/plate banquet. How much was ponied up out of that charity for Palin and her family's trip to NY? June 8, 2009: Palin appears at DC GOP fundraiser that netted $14.5 million. June 9, 2009: Palin was the first guest on John Ziegler's new radio show on KGIL in Los Angeles. Palin endorsed Ziegler's film "Media Malpractice". Palin was on a coast to coast political side-show, in which she pandered her children. Now she feigns outrage?

Absolutely - this is especially delicious since she gave a pass to the same type of "comedy" last fall - and even participated in it on Saturday Night Live - in a skit which alluded to Todd Palin having sex with his daughters. She particpated in that skit!!As I stated above, she couldn't have paid for this type of free publicity and given all of the dinners and fundraisers she's attending on this coast-to-coast spree - she's clearly running in 2012.

18 year olds can and do serve in the military.
When I was 18 I was halfway through my freshman year in college. I'd realized that there was an incredible amount my parents didn't know.
My parents wouldn't have dared defend me against an unfair attack similar to this, in private or public. However they wouldn't have had to do this since by the time I was about 13 they'd taught me to defend myself verbally and physically.
I know that's just me. But why do you think Bristol isn't demanding her mother shut up about this and dealing with it as she chooses?

...why do you think Bristol isn't demanding her mother shut up about this and dealing with it as she chooses? Because her mother is running for Prez in 2012. Bristol knows not to mess her mother's political aspirations. I'm sure she'd be cut off financially from her folks if she did.

Not very 'Republican' of me to be so down on Ms. Palin and her faux and selective outrage, is it?  Why, I could be labeled a downright librul for these comments and suggestions about good Christian, white, Republican, Ms. Palin.
