When I was 18 I was halfway through my freshman year in college. I'd realized that there was an incredible amount my parents didn't know.
My parents wouldn't have dared defend me against an unfair attack similar to this, in private or public. However they wouldn't have had to do this since by the time I was about 13 they'd taught me to defend myself verbally and physically.
I know that's just me. But why do you think Bristol isn't demanding her mother shut up about this and dealing with it as she chooses?
My best guess - and this is only a guess, based on memories of being her age -- Bristol is used to a pretty comfortable life. Bristol is not stupid; single moms with a high school education don't live very well, and she probably knows that. She can't provide for her child on her own, certainly not very well, and she's still dependent (probably physically, financially, and emotionally) on her parents.
The other thing I would suggest is that I personally wouldn't want to face Sarah Palin in a knock-down drag-out; it's probably much worse for Bristol to face down her parents (separately or together.) There were a lot of people who lost arguments with Sarah Palin in the last year or so; I doubt her daughter was any different.
We're not talking some cupcake she can win an argument with (I'm betting). I wouldn't be Bristol Palin for all her youth. Sarah Palin runs that household, runs her kids, and runs her states - I'd be willing to bet on it.
