Perhaps, Hal, after seeing 10 months of hatred and vile and vicious attacks directed at Governor Palin's children and husband, beginning almosts immediately after her nomination as McCain's running mate, they just assumed that they could say anything they wanted to about her and her family and there would continue to be no repercussions. And by the rationalizations and excuses being ginned up in this thread, their assumption was partially warranted.;-)
Yours,

I may have missed the hatred and vile and vicious attacks you refer to. Maybe I don't read those websites. There will always be crude insensitive people out there and with anyone able to post on the Internet I assume vile things were put out there about the Palin family, including Sarah Palin, just as there were about Obama.

Gov. Sarah Palin accepted the apology of late night host David Letterman for making jokes about her family but ended up misquoting the Constitution and the First Amendment while trying to make political hay of the apology.

emphasis mine.

i find it ironic that while we go on and on with this topic a sarahpac ad is to my left on this thread. click on it and tell me that she has not exploited this whole mess for the purpose of keeping her name in the public eye with hopes for a national bid in 2012. go ahead, tell me. if i am right, and will say i am, then she is the one who should be deeply ashamed, not the hapless comics of late night who we expect to be tasteless from time to time. no, she is the one who sees opportunity AT ALL COSTS and plunges headlong into a faux controversy for her own glorification.

???
I don't remember that... and I suppose it would be expecting too much from you to support this allegation.

Ardy, I wrote the same thing. I second the request for examples from Issodhos.

And I applaud you for being equally appalled by the same type of "humor" at the expense of the Obamas and Clintons. Fair and Balanced!

Here's an entire page of Bristol Palin jokes from the late night comedians: Political Humor .

A sample:

"Hey, some sad news. Bristol Palin, you know, the daughter of Governor Sarah Palin, and her fiance, Levi Johnston, have broken up. Well, who could have seen that coming? Ironically, you know what happened? She could see him with another girl from her front porch." --Jay Leno

"Sarah Palin is going to drop the first puck at the Philadelphia Flyers' hockey game. Then Palin will spend the rest of the game trying to keep the hockey players out of her daughter's penalty box." --Conan O'Brien

"It's true, John McCain's running mate, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, has revealed that her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant. Palin said, 'We should never have introduced her to John Edwards.'" --Conan O'Brien

The question is why now after Bristol was the object of jokes ever since her pregancy was announced. Here's an article about it that includes even more jokes.

But it wasn't politics (although it is now), it was comedy (or at least was supposed to be). Why is no one outraged at the shot Letterman took at Alex Rodriguez? Why aren't the Yankee's out there defending their "star"? How could he defame the game of Baseball like that? Really, he should be ashamed!

The pattern with Sarah Palin, throughout he political career, has been honing fake "outrage." This is just typical. I'm with those who thought "oh, that joke bombed," and moved on, rather than those who thought, "how could he!?" Alex Rodriguez was the butt of the joke, my friends, Bristol/Sarah were just the punchline. It should have gotten 30 seconds of attention, and done. Good GOD, we're talking about Sarah PALIN, here. Why? She is a never-was, a pathetic loser, a brainless twit. She doesn't deserve as much attention as a deodorant ad... at least that is a useful product.

A well reasoned argument is like a diamond: impervious to corruption and crystal clear - and infinitely rarer.

Here, as elsewhere, people are outraged at what feels like a rigged game -- an economy that won't respond, a democracy that won't listen, and a financial sector that holds all the cards. - Robert Reich
