Ah, but common decency is an amorphous thing. At one time it prohibited mentioning African Americans except in pejorative terms, depicted women as lesser than, and often still condones homophobia.
There is no definition to the term except in the eye of the beholder.
My experience is the term is most often used by brainless people who have no logic to their argument. Well, okay. Perhaps you would assist by finding a more suitable word or phrase that would reflect what was intended. "Kindness", perhaps? "Gentleness?" It would be the charitable thing for you to do for one such as me who you apparently consider brainless and without logic.:-) Yours in gratitude, Issodhos

...I still just don't see how that makes it okay to make obscene jokes about children. No one has ever made a joke about Judy Garland's daughter? Tatum O'Neil, Jody Foster, Carrie Fisher? Right. Just because it's done doesn't make it right. Slavery was practiced in this country, did that make it right?

Those who want to side with Palin will call Bristol a child. Piffle. It has nothing to do with siding with Governor Palin or determining what Bristol is to be called. It has to do with those who want to side with common decency. Yours, Issodhos Ah, but common decency is an amorphous thing. At one time it prohibited mentioning African Americans except in pejorative terms, depicted women as lesser than, and often still condones homophobia. There is no definition to the term except in the eye of the beholder. My experience is the term is most often used by brainless people who have no logic to their argument. No, it is used by those who fight for equal rights, like Martin Luther King did, and for gaining votes for same-sex marriage. THROUGH VERY different means and under very different circumstances, lawmakers in Vermont and the District yesterday came to the same conclusion: Common decency and the protections guaranteed to all citizens by the rule of law demand that the relationships of gay men and lesbians be respected and recognized.
Nine years ago, Vermont became the first state to legally recognize civil unions. Yesterday, the state House and Senate voted to override the governor's veto of a same-sex marriage bill that was passed last week. With its 100-49 vote in the House -- exactly the number of votes needed ... Source

Once again - the focus, at least on this thread, is (maybe I can summarize) how much of a minor's life can be placed in the public domain due to the position of her parents. You want to talk about parental rights? That's a whooole different story, don't you think? ...for the billionth time the joke was not directed at Willow - it was supposed to be about 18 year old I'm a failure at abstinence Bristol Palin. And for the billionth time, Bristol was not the target Letterman hit. And the target(s) of this thread \'s title are mostly underage-and that was intentional. And you think it's "delicious"...

greger, what gets me is that you and a couple of well meaning people on this thread keep going back to the whole child thing, Beggin yer pardon there, 2wins, but the title of the thread is BANGING SARAH PALIN'S DAUGHTERS not "Banging the 18 year old" not "Banging Sarah Palin" but her daughters. Plural, The 18 year old, the 14 year old, the preteen, and the baby. The joke was specifically, if mistakenly, aimed at the 14 year old. You guys might feel like crude sexual jokes about children are cool and wonderful humor, I don't. I'd be happy to stop arguing if you'd stop telling me its ok for old men to talk about screwing a 14 year old on national tv and that it's funny and ok because it's Sarah Palin's Daughter. If the thread is now about Sarah Palin I'm done with because I hate the woman and have nothing to say about her. as i said, i did not think the jokes in good taste at all. i'm not certain what other male on this thread thinks otherwise. i might have missed that. also, you and i seem to disagree on the nature of this thread. by virtue of gov. palin's position and behavior, i see this as a topic aimed squarely at her. Really? Then explain this cheap shot: I don't know if Willow is getting it on with any of the locals up in Alaska or if she is handing it out on the road but when a young, impressionable teenage girl has role models like Sarah and Bristol Palin anything is possible. This a direct quote from the lead post of this thread. Maybe just another "unintended target" you suppose?

after thinking about this thread, it occurs to me that a lot of views expressed are pretty conservative. Very interesting. No they're not: They really don't have anything to do with left versus right. They have everything to do with our reaction to bullying. Perhaps accidentally, Letterman hurt somebody much weaker and much smaller. I don't have any children myself, but I still have a sense of Liberal Outrage when I see the powerful go after the powerless. In fact, the deep emotions that stirs may be most of the basis of my political identity. Even David Letterman acknowledged the fact that his joke had done injury to a 14 year old girl, in his real apology.

And the title of this thread most certainly made intentional targets of minor children. Isn't there a rule about titles of threads that quote material from an external source?

Just because it's done doesn't make it right. Slavery was practiced in this country, did that make it right? Good point. And for the billionth time, Bristol was not the target Letterman hit. True. Do you think this episode has changed Willow's values regarding sex? Do you think that, perhaps, she won't grew up to be like her sister? Mom? How do you think this episode has affected Willow - being a young girl once yourself?
