I agree 100%.

I was thinking, what if I were 14 and someone inadvertantly said sexual about me. I'd be completely embarrassed to even go out the front door.

It wasn't until Scout's post that Letterman's remark hit the wrong target that I began to see the light.

Sometimes, I'm dense...and dare I say...stubborn... Hmm

No they're not: They really don't have anything to do with left versus right. They have everything to do with our reaction to bullying. Perhaps accidentally, Letterman hurt somebody much weaker and much smaller. I don't have any children myself, but I still have a sense of Liberal Outrage when I see the powerful go after the powerless. In fact, the deep emotions that stirs may be most of the basis of my political identity.

Even David Letterman acknowledged the fact that his joke had done injury to a 14 year old girl, in his real apology.

"If" Letterman "cracked a joke" about "those Little Bullies" who "infiltrate" The Public School System in "Our Country"- "Who knows?"- "Would" it "bring out" those Parents who "insist that"-It ain't My Kid!?

That's "a war of words" [and more?] I'd "like to see"!

I disagree, it was political - otherwise, why pick a figure whose sole national raison d'etre is politics as the target?

Had the First Family been in attendance and had Letterman's writers referred to one of the Obama daughters as the butt (no pun intended), would that have been "comedy"? Would it be brushed off with a well, the Obama's set it up by dragging their children into it? I think not. I'll wager the famous half donut that everyone now rationalizing it would be apopleptic with rage and that all of the forms of the term racism would have been used numerous times.

Why is no one outraged at the shot Letterman took at Alex Rodriguez? Why aren't the Yankee's out there defending their "star"? How could he defame the game of Baseball like that? Really, he should be ashamed!
Adult philanderer A-Rod has sort of brought it on himself, hasn't he? Like those "family values" pols caught in flagrante. Defend A-Rod? The Yankees don't give a jolly rat's ass what he does as long as he can deliver the entertainment and pack 'em in. The game, the sport of baseball might be outraged, but the big business of professional sports gives not a care for the "shame" factor. A-Rod could be shtuping 12-year-olds and the Yankees would not care if they thought it could be either concealed or spun to their advantage.

Again: substitute the First Family for the Palins, and make either daughter the butt in the punchline...then try to trivialize the outraged responses that would follow. Then tell me it isn't about politics.

I guess the only reason letterman might make fun of Michael Jackson would be to attack him as an entertainer... which is his raison d'etre

Is there any raison d'etre other than as a political personality that brings to or keeps the Palins in the frontal lobes of the national psyche? Perhaps a background as a writer, educator, scientist, etc...? Jackson is not the butt of jokes because of his political proclivities and his family, and Palin is not having her turn in the barrel because she is an entertainment personality.

too much. this is really a simple matter. letterman cracks a tasteless joke at the expense of a highly charged national figure - more specifically her daughter - in hopes of getting the attention he seeks, which equals potential ratings at a time when he is being challenged by conan obrien. gov. palin fires back in an effort to gain the attention she seeks and maintain a certain level of public attention in hopes of maintaining her status at a time when there is an internal struggle for the so-called soul of the republican party. it is simple. sometimes the reasoning is just that simple. both parties are guilty of opportunism, both for similar yet diverging reasons.

Oh 2wins, you spinner of words, you. Don't you understand, it is a morality play?

Phil, you've been quite flippant about this entire thread. If the Obama daughters were called nappy headed little ho's by some right wing comedian would your attitude be the same? If Governor Palin had been with a 14 year old son and the son had been called a queer or a faggot and a joke was made about him having sex with well known gay personality would your attitude be the same? Or would you be saying something about common decency...........

Simply because it is Governor Palin it seems that anything goes.
And, of course she would use it to grab attention, which makes it even more stupid on Lettermans part, he handed her the moral high ground. He said something astoundingly stupid and was forced to apologize to Sarah Palin. Millions of idiot right wingnuts are standing taller and prouder today just knowing that the left has shown how ugly, and irresponsible they can be, the right has proven that they and only they are the party of real family values. It really is a "morality play" and they just won a round.
Sarah Palin is one step closer to the Whitehouse in 2012 because of this.
