This seems a fair point Greg.

however to temper it a little, Palin did use her family in the front lines of both the campaign and her PR stragegy. That doesnt mean that everything is fair game but ive long ago given up hope of any sense of common decency in PR wars.

I haven't commented here, but all the responses are interesting and indeed passionate. My thought this morning is that David Letterman has admitted he made a mistake and apologized. What else needs to be said?

Yes Letterman has apologied and I honestly don't hold this against him or think less of him for it. Why are we discussing it? Mostly because it's fun or it wouldn't have gone on this long. It isn't even about Letterman so much as a question of what is right or wrong, in entertainment and in politics.
It's just an interesting topic for debate and nothing more.

Phil, I apologize if my post this morning was offensive to you. it was early and I really wasn't thinking clearly yet.

Not to worry about Ms. Palin ever stepping foot into the White House as POTUS.

Greger,I have not been flippant, just have marveled at how long we can go on and on about this. It was a tasteless joke, one that is correctly condemned. I believe I have said so.

However, it seems to me some have wished to make something more of the incident, and that is your/their privilege, as is mine to be puzzled.

I held this position too for many pages until Scout pointed out to me that David Letterman's joke missed it's intended target and actually hit an innocent 14-year old bystander.

...it was until then that I realized this joke had an unintended, and harmful effect, on the fourteen year old bystander.

I'm still of the opinion if Bristol was at the ballgame, the joke would have been fair play - given her notoriety and her insistance to continue to make public appearances lamenting about her 'bad choice.'

If Bristol wants to be out of the limelight - then stay out of the limelight.

Rick, I do not believe I have ever suggested the impact on Willow was anything but harmful. I have never said the incident was victimless.

I just don't know what has been added after that was established by, say, page 2.

I know you haven't Phil, I was speaking for myself. I was dense in that regard. I felt it was just a tasteless joke, until it was explained to me that it has/had a harmful affect on an innocent bystander.

Come now, Phil. Most of the pages after page 2 were dedicated to the haters of Sarah Palin attempting to blame her for what Letterman said (and, I think, to whitewash the Dem rage and hatred directed at her entire family in the days following her nomination to be McCain's VP -- maybe it is a hater thingie).;-)
