Back in my other life, Mr. mar and I would GARDEN, and I'd do homemade ketchup--recipe from the Ball Brothers cookbook. Bears no relation to that store-bought stuff. My best friends used to get a bottle for a Cristmas present. Gee, I had a lot more best friends back then. I wonder ...

Rick definitely does not speak for me on this subject:
Hamburger: A1 and a little mayo, with lettuce & slices of tomato & red onion Hot dog: mustard & sweet pickle relish or else chili & chopped onions Meatloaf: Ketchup Cold Meatloaf Sandwich: Ketchup & mayo Hot Meatloaf Sandwich: brown gravy French Fries: 2/3 mayo 1/3 Ketchup mixed together well Hashbrowns: Extra crispy with salt & pepper, and nothing else
My wife, on the other hand, is "ketchup on everything girl": Everything mentioned above, plus fried eggs, mashed potatoes, steak, on and on...
BTW: In San Diego supermarkets, I have seen Ketchup & Catsup both on labels in the "red tomato-based condiment" section.

I have never had a commercial ketchup which I did not detest. I eat my french fries --- pardon! my "freedom fries" --- with salt and pepper and nothing else. Though occasionally I now have them the Canadian way, with a little vinegar sprinkled on them! It's much better than it sounds!
I spell the word "ketchup"; it is a closer approximation to the original Chinese word, in coastal Fukienese dialect, ke-tsiap (Mandarin: qié-jiàng). It literally means "eggplant sauce," but the Chinese word for "tomato" is fän-qié, "foreign eggplant," so it could just as well be short for "tomato sauce."
Whatever the vagaries of its composition in foreign lands, it certainly started out as a vegetable sauce, either eggplant or tomato. I give the nod to tomato, since the Spanish introduced tomatoes to China soon after their conquest of America.
K. C. Chang in his excellent study, Food in Chinese Culture, notes that tomatoes provided essential vitamins to the Chinese diet at certain times of the year, and played their part in the rapid rise of Chinese population after the introduction of New World foodstuffs to China.

About the meatloaf thing.
Now, I've had meatloaf with a sauce that is made with ketchup...but has a distinctive flavor apart from ketchup. Actually, I guess it could be made with tomato paste, etc.
The only commercial version of it...and I can't even find it anymore is made by "Hunt" foods.
I'm sure that Hunt may not be nationwide, but it's possible.
My grandmother always whipped up the topping for meatloaf and since she passed away...I don't have a clue how she made it. There's nobody alive in my family who might know.
But, I dare say I don't like just plain ketchup on my meatloaf. And...the gravy used, or some people like to make with it, well, it's okay. Not my favorite way to eat meatloaf.

Not catsup. Ever. Sounds like it got sucked out of a feline. Very little ketchup here. One bottle stays in the refrigerator until way past the expiration date and then gets thrown out. As far as I'm concerned, ketchup's only good for covering up the taste of whatever it's put on. If I don't like something, I won't eat it in the first place. The worst thing people do with ketchup (IMO) is squirt it on eggs. Ewwww. (So Loganrbt...you may have beaten Nancyvideo's record for number of pages generated in one day. )

I used to make my meatloaf with tomato paste. But, I bought six cans of Campbell's tomato soup only to find out after purchase that there is corn syrup in it.
Rather than toss it out, I'm using the tomato soup to replace the tomato paste.
I'll return to tomato paste when I'm finished with the tomato soup and, with your suggestion, loganrbt, and add worcestershire sauce - and give that a try.
How much worchestershire sauce do you use?
