I have McAfee running on all the computers at home and at work. (About 20 PCs running Windows 2000 Pro, XP, and Vista.) (I get it free with AT&T DSL service at both locations.) It scans all files as you download them, including all HTML web pages, java scripts, even graphics files like gif and mpg formats that are known to carry viruses and other exploits. It also pops up a little "are you sure?" warning window if you click a link to go to a website they have found problematic in the past.

CHB has always been clean, though sometimes the ad servers for the ads have been very slow. Not CHB's fault!

there you go with the abstinence only angle again

intimacy with your computer is absolutely fine as long as you use protection.

Turns out I picked up the viruses from my company's servers!

I know!! shocked

Also turns out some naughty employees were using Bit Torrent programs and peer-to-peer programs and downloading free music.

The I.T. department and the Executive Mucky Mucks are not amused. Terminiation for employees who do that again.

I did find IE8 to have stability issues. I'm not supposed to add programs to my company computer.

...but given that this is my primary computer for the moment, and little "window washer" program and a registry cleaner won't hurt. Hmm , wink

Firefox.
Internet Exploder, as I've "affectionately" referred to IE for the last ten years, is a piece of Swiss Cheese.
I only keep it around because M$ and a couple of other sites require it for some updates.

I use IE, Firefox, Opera and Safari. The reliability and functionality are dependent on the platform. For the PC, it would be in the order given. On the Mac, Safari is optimized but both Firefox and Opera work well. Most mobile devices support only one browser Opera and Safari being the big two. Over time, I've definitely logged more time on IE than any other browser. I've never had a successful virus/Trojan Horse/malware attack. I've never had a problem with IE that I haven't experienced with other browsers. However, my perception is that IE gets corrected faster than the other browsers. Some difficulties/errors in other browsers have been around so long that it has become "something you have to live with". I've never tried Chrome. I'd imagine it's much like the other four. All and all, the major browsers are like ice cream: to each his own.
