Rick, you might try just doing a "system restore" to a point before this problem started. That usually fixes the malware problems.

I use IE 8 as my browser.

Since you use the company lap top, I thnk there is a limited amount that they would want you to do on your own It soulds like you have tech support who should have the expertise to help.

Greger, I tried the restore point. The computer won't restore to any that date I pick. I tried restoring prior to upgrading to IE 8 when I noticed things starting to get weird.

Things have really gotten bad now, I can't even get the browser to function unless I VPN and use my company's servers to surf the web.

Anywhoooo....

I have meetings at the Corp office this week so I'll drop the laptop off at I.T. (...minus the few programs that I've installed wink )

I just ran across a neighbor with the same problem... I didn't have time to dig in or to reinstall IE8, but I did go to Google Chrome which FWIW is faster, easier and cleaner than IE8... I've been using it since it came out a few years back, and wouldn't trade. IMHO, for the way I use it, it's the best.

It's a quick download , free and a snap to install. Worth a try.

I use both IE8 and FoxFire.

Very recently Microsoft has offered a free software called "Microsoft Security Essentials" that is a combo virus scanner and malware-spyware program...and has a unique feature of running in real time. It grabs viruses and bad stuff as they try to invade one's computer...rather than waiting for the virus software to discover problems at a later time, which is normally during a routine scheduled scan.

Microsoft had a program called Windows Defender (still does), which actually is included with OS Service Pack Updates. If Microsoft Security Essentials is installed it will either disable or remove Defender because it was designed as a malware-spyware progam only.

I've been running it for about month and it's working really well on my computer. It's done what is has claimed to do.

Personally, I have found that refraining from French kissing and/or having sexual relations with your computer greatly reduces the likelihood of contracting a virus while at any site. I'm not sure how this works but a born again friend of mine told me about it. shocked wink grin
