...caring for the sick is a responsibility. That is the premise we operate on today and it works pretty well. Who's going to pay for that responsibility? The premise doesn't seem to be working very well when hospitals in Los Angeles dump patients who don't have health care onto the streets of Skid Row.

Several people have previously suggested that "real change" will only come to this country when the system mostly collapses.
We definitely do not have a consensus on which to go forward with any policy initiative on anything really.
It seems to me that the democrats and Republican should agree to massive cuts in federal spending.... MASSIVE... drive the country into ruin... have people on the street starving... re-instate the gold standard... eliminate the Fed.
Give people what they want... and see if that is "really" what they want.
Note... As we consider re-instating the gold standard, I would like to raise a question for consideration. We set a gold based value for the dollar at some arbitratry level. You are the chinese sitting with about a trillin dollar of US debt. If you were the chinese, what would you do?

Below is a very interesting piece on how unpopular HCR is in America. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB100...6138.html?mod=WSJ_Opinion_LEFTTopOpinion ----------------SNIP--------------------------- First, we asked voters how their incumbent senator voted on the health-care bill that passed on Christmas Eve. About two-thirds answered correctly. Even now, long before Senate campaigns have intensified, voters know where the candidates stand on health care. And second, we asked voters about their preference for Democrat versus Republican candidates in a generic House race. As in the Senate, the higher the level of opposition to health reform, the greater the likelihood that the state's voters supported Republicans. ----------------------SNIP------------------------------

A little bitter this morning? Not really, I just think that if there is a viable alternative, we should try it. Is there something about my proposal that you disagree with?

A little bitter this morning? Not really, I just think that if there is a viable alternative, we should try it. Is there something about my proposal that you disagree with? We had the chance to limit the scope and effect of failure when it happened, instead we bailed them out. At the time I advocated letting them fail and allowing solvent banks to take over their business, I was told that only far right wing nuts would advocate such a path. I still believe that had we done that we would be in full recovery by now, instead $1.75T later we are still struggling. The solution isn't to blow it up and start over, the solution is to listen to what the people want and explain why they can or can't have it. The great unwashed masses out in the world actually do know better than the politicians we send to Washington, it is just that sometimes Washington forgets that.

We had the chance to limit the scope and effect of failure when it happened, instead we bailed them out... Both Parties did this. Too big to fail? Too bad! Buh-bye sucker! sidebar: Citibank is still teetering on the edge of collapse. They've paid back their TARP monies, early. Why? I do not think Irk is correct and I do not think Al Quaeda is coming this way, CS. It is quite a bit more likely that our military will be heavily occupying Haiti for some time to come.
EmmaG The US military is stretched thin, the future plans for a war with Iran will require all available hands. Haiti will be declared a waste of money and Rush Limbaugh's quip that our income tax already pays for reconstruction will echo in the halls of his faithful brethren. Even the tea baggers, now irrelevant thanks to the death of health care reform, will adopt a new "Hands Off Haiti" campaign. Don't underestimate the capacity of the US military to abandon countries in their time of greatest need. That's exactly what we did in Cuba, in Iraq when the uprising against Saddam happened and in Afghanistan. Sorry Emma, but as quickly as we got there, we will leave even quicker when the new obstructionist GOP minority taps into the illiterate populist anger. Haiti will be declared Obama's pet project and targeted for failure. I can hear it now, "Haiti, Obama's second Waterloo!" And Al-Qaeda WILL capitalize on that failure.
