1) I bought a pressure cooker as a result of an earlier conversation here. I don't use it often but when I do, I'm glad I have it, and it was worth the money. NOT scary at all (yes, Mom's was frightening!) And yes, fairly heavy. If you're in a hurry or pressed for time, you really can't beat them.

Thank you, Joe. I have two steamers and two crockpots. I think I'll stick with those for now.
And last night we ate a rotisserie chicken from Publix, an avocado and a salad.
EmmaG I've just started out on my crockpot journey and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. They're especially good for stews and soups. I use steamers a lot for shrimp.

There is a good reason for soaking beans for several hours, and changing the soak water a few times: It is supposed to remove a lot of the indigestable oligosaccharides that would otherwise make for toots! You can see it in the first soak water after a couple of hours.
So I'll keep on doing that, even if I could just dump them right into the pressure cooker.

Tonight I'm having a chicken sandwich (leftovers from the Publix rotisserie last night), with lettuce and tomato on tomato-herb bread from the Mennonite bakery in Thomasville, Georgia. Oh, and a glass of milk.

Home-made mac and cheese with green beans and salad tonight. During Lent, we make one meatless meal a week and donate money to our church's food pantry.
Tomorrow, I am making Butter beans and hamhocks in the crock pot, with collard greens, corn bread and cracklins. Plus more salad.
milk and Girl Scout cookies ;-)

Tomorrow, I am making Butter beans and hamhocks in the crock pot, with collard greens, corn bread and cracklins. Plus more salad. That's a good meal by my definition too! I love butter beans and collard greens and corn bread. Put a sweet potato with it and you've got my perfect meal. What do you mean corn bread and cracklins though, Scout? How do you make corn bread?

I love the flavor and texture of chickpeas but don't have a a lot of recipes for them Julia, I hate to suggest anything so mundane, but if you Google "Garbanzo recipes" you will be inundated with delicious choices and ways to cook that unusual bean. Simply put, if a recipe sounds good to you, you will probably like it. Supper last night was: a Puff Pastry filled with Shrimp, Flounder and Spinach topped with White Wine Sauce. Garnished with lightly steamed Broccoli Florets Garden Salad with Pickled Eggs and Beets, Marinated Mushrooms, Roasted Red Pepper, Cherry Tomatoes, Carrots and Romaine Lettuce Cornish Hens, dry rubbed and lightly floured, slowly and gently roasted to perfection. Served with Homemade Cranberry Sauce with Mandarin Orange slices, Great Northern Beans (soaked overnight and slowly simmered with a Ham hock on the stove top) Walnut Bread. Fresh baked and warm from the oven A sparkling White Wine from Italy And finally, Apple Pie ala mode, with Sumatran coffee
Good coffee, good weed, and time on my hands...
