- Le Monde: BLACK, RED AND GREEN OBAMAAbove all, the president is placing special emphasis on new technologies. Thirty billion dollars are devoted to such technologies in his rescue package, and 900,000 new jobs in the sector are to be created very quickly....Priority has been given to three areas: health, the electric grid and internet broadband. At this rate, Europe – which had expected to be the most competitive economy in 2010 – has cause to worry.
[SNIP]
His handling of the crisis in the motor industry is revealing. Having sacked the boss of General Motors, he is now going to hand over the keys to both GM and Chrysler to the auto workers’ union, the United Auto Workers, which is poised to become the principal shareholder in the two companies.... Thanks, Mr Obama!
...most of those dubbed “rich” by the press had hoped to evade the tax rise by means of a few, judicious tax haven investments. Their hopes proved in vain.... The facilities allowing multinationals to pay only 2.3 percent tax on overseas profits have been brought to an end. Obama hopes this will mean an extra $210 billion for the government’s coffers. In a departure from his usual urbanity, he even stooped so low as to condemn a Cayman Islands law firm with which 18,857 companies are registered....
Mark my words, there is still more trouble to come from this Mr. Obama. Sixty million "Surrender Monkeys" can't be wrong --- especially when they are in irony mode. -

Ho-hum...here we go again.
Dow Jones Industrial Average (5/4/09): 8,420.37, +207.96 (2.53%) Opps. that dang Obama got the Dow to go up even more 9,278 I am guessing that all our GOP brethren are real appreciative.

Thankfully, the Right-Thinking people of this country have been able to block most of the Socialist/Communist/Fascist agenda of the president allowing for this modest gain. Just think how much better the market and the economy would be if we had continued and strengthened the policies of the previous administration!

Let's start with Mr. Obama's carbon tax. That cost will be transfered directly to the consumer via higher energy costs. Let's take away the carbon tax for a moment, Ma. Do you honestly believe energy costs from current conventional sources (fossil fuels) will go DOWN someday if only that mean horrible Obama will stop? Maybe you missed the scuttlebutt on some of the other causes of high energy costs lately. Oh I dunno, maybe they forgot to tell you about what's happening with demand and our ability to keep up. Ma, if they take away the carbon tax tomorrow, there will still be a torrent of very good reasons to tax a lot of our current sources of energy...to TAMP DOWN RUNAWAY DEMAND and to force increases in EFFICIENCY. Since such taxes are across the board it's disingenuous to say that they're specifically targeted at poor folks. Everything's targeted at poor folks, because it's almost impossible for most things NOT to be, BECAUSE THEY'RE POOR! Funny how ideas which could be helpful have a way of evaporating into thin air right before they reach the poor folks, sort of the way the Southern California Marine Layer evaporates when it hits the Coachella Valley. Except that it's not the mountain ranges, it's the mountain of obstructionism coming from the Republican Party. And I suspect that all this newfound concern for the poor folks is really a mask to hide the real concern, for the Republican wallets. I can set my watch by that, it's very dependable. Boring, but dependable.

We can no longer use the Dow as a yardstick for success or failure, as it no longer follows the narrative. Let us instead look for something else that casts the current administration in a negative light, again regardless of whether the GOP was more responsible for it, say for example, the cost of keeping troops overseas! We could say that it detracts from Homeland Security and those troops should be at home, and that fighting the fight over there should take a back seat to our needs at home. Will that work? It is unlikely that the current administration will be able to extract us from "Obama's Wars" before the next election, so I think this meme could have legs. Whattyallthink?
A well reasoned argument is like a diamond: impervious to corruption and crystal clear - and infinitely rarer.
Here, as elsewhere, people are outraged at what feels like a rigged game -- an economy that won't respond, a democracy that won't listen, and a financial sector that holds all the cards. - Robert Reich
