Ken's correct. No one source or two sources or more at this point is going to be enough. But we can begin to alter our way of life in such a way that we wean ourselves off the oil teat.
I'm an optimist, it's just that there isn't anything to be optimistic about. Many, or most, Americans are committed to wild assed überconsumerism. Advertise the hell out of it, make it glittery and colorful, say it's bigger, better, new, more, improved and we can't help ourselves. Imported, seen on TV, neighbor down the street has it, seen on Paris Hilton and we just gotta have it. That's us. I actually know people who won't eat anywhere if it isn't a chain restaurant!
Take that American persona and think of buying local, buying apples with spots, slow food, second hand, and doing whatever non-digitally and non-electrically. Some Americans will go for it, most won't. Corporate America is doing all it can to make sure Americans continue to want dumbass things like Hummers and cosmetic surgery, microwave popcorn and exotic coffee and mega TVs in every room so that we can watch "reality" shows and sweet feck all.
What's wrong with taking the train? One problem is that for most people the train doesn't go anywhere. It could. But no, we're building more roads and bigger. We have to be there faster and we have to arrive in style.
Or we can try to party on until the lights go out on damn near everything in the next 5 or 6 years when there will be no well placed alternatives.
I'm pulling hard for us to begin to make sweeping changes and moderate to medium sacrifices now. However, I'm betting America will wait until the lights go out.
