Ken's correct. No one source or two sources or more at this point is going to be enough. But we can begin to alter our way of life in such a way that we wean ourselves off the oil teat.
I'm an optimist, it's just that there isn't anything to be optimistic about. Many, or most, Americans are committed to wild assed überconsumerism. Advertise the hell out of it, make it glittery and colorful, say it's bigger, better, new, more, improved and we can't help ourselves. Imported, seen on TV, neighbor down the street has it, seen on Paris Hilton and we just gotta have it. That's us. I actually know people who won't eat anywhere if it isn't a chain restaurant!
Take that American persona and think of buying local, buying apples with spots, slow food, second hand, and doing whatever non-digitally and non-electrically. Some Americans will go for it, most won't. Corporate America is doing all it can to make sure Americans continue to want dumbass things like Hummers and cosmetic surgery, microwave popcorn and exotic coffee and mega TVs in every room so that we can watch "reality" shows and sweet feck all.
What's wrong with taking the train? One problem is that for most people the train doesn't go anywhere. It could. But no, we're building more roads and bigger. We have to be there faster and we have to arrive in style.
Or we can try to party on until the lights go out on damn near everything in the next 5 or 6 years when there will be no well placed alternatives.
I'm pulling hard for us to begin to make sweeping changes and moderate to medium sacrifices now. However, I'm betting America will wait until the lights go out.

Plans to evacuate Tampa Bay area expected to be announced. From the article: Gulf Oil Spill 2010: Plans to evacuate Tampa Bay area expected to be announced
Plans to evacuate the Tampa Bay area are expected to be announced in the coming days as FEMA prepares for what is now being called the worst oil disaster in the history of the world.
Estimates of the rate of BP's Deepwater Horizon oil spill by skyTruth.com, put more accurate numbers at more than 1 million gallons a day, based on satellite and Coast Guard images.

According to that article, the evacuation is only for the elderly and those with respiratory problems, IF the spill is set on fire.
The headline seems a bit more...well, overstated?

You're right. The headline may be overstated. The Gulf is no beaker, but here's one possible solution that is at least worth considering. I don't know how this simulation experiment would translate to actual environmental conditions.

Oyster season opening early: Could be a good idea? From the article: APALACHICOLA — Beginning 12:01 a.m. Friday, oystermen will be able to harvest from a larger portion of Apalachicola Bay, 11 days ahead of the traditional June 1 opening of the summer oyster harvesting sections, the state announced Thursday.
“It’s 11 days early, but it’s not going to hurt anything,” FWC Lt. Stan Kirkland said Thursday.

Republican Senator Lamar Alexander: "Govt Should Take Over BP" How very Hugo Chavez of Mr. Alexander. I have a question. If BP is destroying our environment to the point where Repugnicans are considering a government takeover, then why is it not reasonable to assert that health insurance companies are destroying Americans access to affordable health insurance?

Could this be the biggest event in Recorded History? Considering the oil "spill" is pumping an Exxon Valdez sized spill into the Gulf every day or two, I'd say that it's at least in the running.
