I remain how a private company can hire the services of private armed goons to deny public citizens access to public areas. Something about all that just blows my mind. What's worse is that American apparently comply with. Certainly the police comply with it in their jurisdiction, and the city and county governments seem to comply.
I suspect that the goons are to keep the reporters, journalists, and anyone with a camera or video recorder away. The public and local governmental agencies comply because of money. BP is a very big employer and the local economies depend upon BP. People are scared. Check out THE SHORT FILM BP DOESN'T WANT YOU TO SEE. and I believe that you'll get a feeling of the climate of fear that motivates the compliance and silence.
In 2004 TX Rep Joe Barton told a Congressional subcommittee that offshore deepwater oil drilling is so safe that even a gum wrapper wouldn't fall overboard.
I'd love to market DEEPWATER HORIZON chewing gum, with the proceeds to go toward a suitable Gulf Coast cleanup charity. Naturally I'd also love to deliver some of the gum to Joe Barton's office, of course.
What do you think? Does this idea have legs?

Some of that DEEP WATER HORIZON "chewing gum" is about ready to show up on Panama City beaches. All the politicians and oil people are talking "clean up" while the oil volcano continues to gush oil into the GOM with no end in sight. 20 billion isn't going to begin to cover the cost of this disaster. BTW- who's going to administer distribution of that 20 billion? I'll bet that it will be "siphoned" off a lot quicker than the oil.
"Looks like injuries and loss of life are heavy. Expect a lot of follow up coverage tomorrow. Then I believe it will essentially go away -- due to the holiday weekend,"
BP America public relations chief Patricia Wright, on the heels of the 2005 BP TEXAS CITY REFINERY EXPLOSION which killed FIFTEEN and injured 180. Does anyone still think BP is doing their best to stop the gusher and save the Gulf Coast?
I imagine they are doing "their best" but I'm afraid that nothing they do will be good enough. So far this is stacking up to be the worst man made disaster in history. I think it's 60 days now since it began. That's something like 120 million gallons of oil and counting. What does 120 million gallons look like? Sony Created 120 million gallons of foam in Downtown Miami for this commercial:
Conceptual Art goes mainstream in that brilliant add above. I suspect that the flow rate of the "BP oil spill" may be considerably understated. Because of recent disclosures, oil gushing into the GOM isn't the only problem. Gulf oil full of methane, adding new concerns From the article:
Quote
NEW ORLEANS — It is an overlooked danger in oil spill crisis: The crude gushing from the well contains vast amounts of natural gas that could pose a serious threat to the Gulf of Mexico's fragile ecosystem.
The oil emanating from the seafloor contains about 40 percent methane, compared with about 5 percent found in typical oil deposits, said John Kessler, a Texas A&M University oceanographer who is studying the impact of methane from the spill.
That means huge quantities of methane have entered the Gulf, scientists say, potentially suffocating marine life and creating "dead zones" where oxygen is so depleted that nothing lives.
"This is the most vigorous methane eruption in modern human history," Kessler said.
Good Grief. This is going to make Chernobyl look like a hiccup, Katrina like a balmy spring breeze, the Hindenburg like a firecracker.... Oh, the Humanity!
Reading today's "news" I think I see what the consensus story line is working out to be.
"BP is at fault, n one of the business partners knew how messed up BP was, they made all the mistakes and are solely responsible. Not even is the government responsible because it was not the supervising agency.
Further, BP's errors were all preventable if they had just done what all the other well owners routinely do. Therefore, deep water drilling is safe when done the way all the rest do it.
Drill baby drill, but do it the way all the rest do it."
