For itstarted:

FYI DuckPin is also Maryland--also original 13 but not inhabited by Rip Van Winkle. Ocean Cty, MD, also does vineg ar on french fries.

LOL

In my case, it had to do with the Newport Creamery, the best ice cream parlor in the world. The feature ice cream treat was/is the Awful Awful... Awful big, Awful good... and the feature hamburger was "the Newport Creamery way". That meant it was a super size dripping good burger on toasted home baked bread, with lettuce, onions, cheese, mayonaise, mustard and pick-a-lili (sp?). If there were six of them ordered, it would be 1-hold the onion, 2-hold the onion and mayo, and 3- all d'way.

One more part of the list was mention of the "Haven Brothers" diner. It was located in the center of Providence across from the bus turnaround in front of the Biltmore... My fond memory goes back to about 1942 when mom took me to Providence on the bus, to the Strand Theater... after the movie we climbed the steps to lunch at the diner (an old wood dining car circa 1920's converted to a diner) It's been replaced at least three times since.
Haven Diner

The R.I. blurb was a little bit emotional for me, since I haven't lived there since 1959... Amazing to me, the funny, quirky, localisms in the piece are today, exactly the same as they were 50 years ago... Where else in the world would one find "stuffies"?
