Jeffro, I don't give rat's ass about who you marry or don't. It is my experience that most straight people really don't care. The ignorant and mouthy segment of the American population, the same who hate: Mexicans, liberals, Muslims, France, abortions, Blacks, social programs the support underserved American populations, small business, free speech, education, affirmative action, peace and environmentalists and gays just won't shut the f*ck up.

Almost all those haters are a relatively small cabal of mouthy morans. Truth is Mexicans, liberals, Muslims, Blacks, people who love peace, environmentalists and gays don't hang out with the Moran Cabal anyway.

Jeff

your feelings of outrage are not surprising.

lots of people around the world have good reason to be outraged by lots of different stuff.

All respect for your feelings, but having a valid basis of outrage does not necessarily mean that wallowing in that outrage is anything more than self indulgence.

IMO the Black Panthers accomplished virtually nothing in the stuggle for civil rights.

Everybody needs to let out frustration, Ardy. Jeffro had just watched a movie that made it brutally clear that there really are people out to get him - to limit his actions. It's personal.

Reacting with anger is not the same as wallowing, and neither is fury. Jeffro doesn't really strike me as a wallower.

The only time society/the public/the government sent me that message was the day the ERA failed for good. It's a straightforward statement: You're not as (good/right/capable/whatever) as the rest.

I got drunk and spent the night with someone I didn't know very well. That's wallowing.

Jeffro wrote and posted. That's productive.

Jeffro and Julia, why don't you do what I did: secede from the corrupt, archaic, counter-productive polity known as the United States of America?

Long before I came to Canada, ever since the Vietnam War, I have not been a United Statesian; I lived below the radar of its evil rulers: I took as much as I could from it and gave back as little as I could. That is the only respect in which I resemble the Military-Industrial Complex.

Listen up, Issodhos. You think you are a champion of Individual Rights? Well, I am my own nation: I refuse loyalty to anything other than Truth and Beauty. The United States of America does not exist for me: I either go through it, or around it.

I and my kind are burrowing through the structure of patriotic folly, destroying it from within. Between the folly of the American ruling class and their determination to commit suicide, and the disgust of people like me, who have given up on the nonsense of Americanism, I don't think the USA, in its present form, will last much longer (thank goodness!).

I have considered it, numan - but for reasons of curiosity rather than from bitterness, which I find to be a poor basis for decision-making.

As it happens, I live where I live because this is where the people I love live. Has nothing to do with national borders.

As I've said, you and I see things very differently.

Well, consider how close many of the Tea Party types really are to my position. They think that they are patriotic, and would look with horror and disgust at what I have said. But really, it would not take much to move them from their synthetic super-patriotism to outright rejection of the whole system.

Um, sorry, I see no relationship at all between my choice of where to live and your comments about the Tea Party people.

Thank God.

To All,

My sincerest apologies. I was - quite clearly - drunk last night, for the first time in over a month or two. Watching the Prop 8 documentary was like reliving Election night 2008 but this time all my, seemingly paranoid, thoughts about the Mormon church, their anti-gay stance and hatred were confirmed. I think the reaction of one family whose son had taken his own life because he couldn't change pushed me over the edge. I wasn't aware that the suicide rate in Utah was the highest in the Country or that it is disportionately higher among gay LDS teens. The gay Mormon kids that talked about their own attempts broke my heart.

I'm not about to get all Gay Panther over this, it's not really my style. But the anger and frustration that I didn't even realize I suppressed, surfaced last night. Oddly, in a week where a judge ruled in our favor. I had been reading ignorant and uninformed opinions from pro Prop 8 people talking about the "faggot judge" clearly ruling in his own self interest. That was something I wasn't completely expecting because I had actually followed the case and knew that had nothing to do with the outcome.

I feel like I keep expecting better and I keep getting worse. It's not an excuse, but my recent birthday has me obsessing about these things even more. I know I'm not old but I'm not young either. Birthdays reinforce mortality and I was feeling particularly mortal last night.

The Absolut has been pushed to the back of the freezer

Someone needs to do a Public Service Announcement about drinking and posting.

Jeffro, my virtual friend,

Know that many more people want your marriage to be so accepted that it's not even a matter of discussion than those who want to limit your rights. As Micky said, it's just that those scared of anything new or different are louder. And in the mind of anyone who matters, they don't. Even the majority of our politicians will come to realize that.

Martha

PS I read the thread sans the last two posts, had a friend to visit, then wrote and posted the above. I'm glad you're more at ease, but I still mean it.
