"This is what Pensacola is about, all the different tastes," said Linda Nikolopoulas, 58, of Pensacola.
She was among the crowds on Saturday who poured into Seville Square for the Fiesta of Five Flags Seafood Festival, a three-day event celebrating the bounty of the Gulf of Mexico that has shaped the diverse culture, economy and diets of the waterfront city.
But this year's festival, in its 33rd year, is playing a more pivotal role, signaling the seafood and tourism industries are back in business after a summer of tar balls, oily mats and mousse from the BP oil spill disaster, said Ed Schroeder, the Pensacola Bay Area Chamber of Commerce's tourism chief.
"The festival is one of the largest festivals in Escambia County, next to the Blue Angels air shows," he said. "It draws hundreds of out-of-town visitors."
He said the people who come to the festival and the people who see media accounts end up with the same positive impression.
"When they see beautiful images of Seville Square and Pensacola Bay, and they see delicious seafood being prepared and people eating it and loving it, that will tell them our tourism and fishing industries are healthy," The only oil here is in the fryers! Apparently not everybody is as skeptical as yourself about eating the seafood, Joe. Did you go to the festival?

No. I wonder what size crowd they drew compared to prior years. A lot of people in this area are concerned about the safety of Gulf seafood. One indication in the drop in demand was the absence of vendors parked on the side of the road selling shrimp from their trucks this summer. I genuinely hope that they return next summer. Incidentally,I'm not the only one concerned. From the article: More than half of those waters have reopened, and the government has declared seafood caught from those areas safe, but the public has been slow to add seafood back into their diets. Much of the festival's seafood was imported from the Caribbean, Atlantic Ocean and elsewhere. It's funny that although the government declared seafood caught from the area safe, the fishermen are still liable for any unsafe seafood that they sell. I'll bet that one of the festival's selling points was that "Much of the festival's seafood was imported from the Caribbean, Atlantic Ocean and elsewhere." Seems peculiar if not downright unnecessary since the government deemed it safe. I suppose a campaign slogan such as: "A little blood in the urine or bowel movement never killed anyone! What are you anyway, a wimp?" wouldn't go over well. At any rate, I'll forgo my oysters, shrimp, crab, grouper, snapper, etc. for another season. Although I'm seriously considering attending the Panama City Beach Seafood, Wine, and Music Festival. REO Speedwagon will be appearing. Also, I hear that there's a lot of good wine. I'll consider the shrimp and grouper, especially if it's imported.

' Apparently not everybody is as skeptical as yourself about eating the seafood, Joe. Since most people are mindless, television-stunned consumer-units, I fail to see that that is relevant to the matter. Agencies of the government have lied so often, about so many things, that it would be to throw all common prudence to the winds if one accepted their claims without independent verification. One example: remember how the government assured the people working in the midst of the 9/11 disaster that all was safe?
