A column by Tom Friedman

Quote
In case you missed it, a story circulated around the Web on the eve of President Obama’s trip that it would cost U.S. taxpayers $200 million a day — about $2 billion for the entire trip.

snip

Glenn Beck, on his radio show, saying: “Have you ever seen the president, ever seen the president go over for a vacation where you needed 34 warships, $2 billion — $2 billion, 34 warships. We are sending — he’s traveling with 3,000 people.” In Beck’s rendition, the president’s official state visit to India became “a vacation” accompanied by one-tenth of the U.S. Navy. ”

NY times

It would seem to me that the fact that some people may not read this crap does not make it either less pervasive, or less despicable.

It is one thing to have a legitimate discussion about policy... it is quite another to flat out lie in multiple national media outlets. It seems to me that what ever is left of our democracy is predicated upon our ability to to publicly consider the issues that our nation faces. And I really do not see how that is possible when there is no shred of decency left in media personalities who whip up public outrage based upon fantasy and fabrication.

And once again I will point out that, IMO . this represents a very real difference between so called democrats and so called republicans. IMO the demagogic rhetoric of conservatives extends far beyond stretching the truth, or hyperbole... it is unmitigated contempt for the constraint of truth or facts.

I just do not see how a public dialogue is possible in that situation.

Since America is firmly situated upon a foundation of lies, it is churlish to complain about them.

Shorn of lies, the American political and economic system would collapse in ruin.

Therefore, it behooves all true Americans to show great respect for lies.

I am pleased to note that almost all Americans do fulfill their sacred, patriotic duty.

There you go again, as Ronald Reagan would have said. Set forth your opinion as fact, tell it over and over again, and still no one buys it.

I am pleased to note that all Americans do fulfill their sacred, patriotic duty except for those who desert their country.

Yes, and they have made America what it is!

What's sacred and patriotic about institutionalized lying?

But, er, Beck AND Limbaugh, when asked about whatever, correctly point out that they are 'simply' entertainers (and, probably, scratch their heads in wonderment, and gratitude, at an American public willing/eager/adamant to believe anything but that). Entertainers entertain - their efforts have absolutely NOTHING to do with the truth! Unfortunately it seems that 50% of the electorate, on all sides, don't seem to get it <sigh>.

Good journalism is illegal in the United States of America.

Indeed, so many seem to clamour for maximum security.
