This Week in History

November 28th

1895 - The first automobile race in America began as six cars traveled from Jackson Park in Chicago to Waukegan, Illinois. J. Frank Duryea was the winner, traveling at a speed of 7 and 1/2 miles per hour. It took him 7 hrs. 53 minutes to make the trek. He won $2,000 for the effort.

1932 - Groucho Marx performed on radio for the first time. Using his fast-paced, ingenious patter, he invented a new form of comedy that delighted audiences from coast to coast.

November 29th

1890 - The first Army-Navy football game was played at West Point, New York. The midshipmen from Annapolis dominated, shutting out the cadets, 24-0.

1986 - Actor Cary Grant died on this day at the age of 82. Grant left us with many great cinematic performances: "Night and Day", "Arsenic and Old Lace", "She Done Him Wrong", "The Awful Truth", "The Philadelphia Story", "To Catch a Thief", "North by Northwest" and many more.

November 30th

1940 - Lucille Ball and Cuban musician Desi Arnaz were married. Lucy filed for divorce the day after their final TV show was filmed in 1960.

1956 - Archie Moore was defeated by Floyd Patterson. Patterson won the heavyweight boxing title vacated by the retired Rocky Marciano. At the age of 21, Patterson was the youngest boxer to be named heavyweight champion.

December 1st

1917 - Father Edward Flanagan opened Boys Town, a farm village for wayward boys (and for girls since 1979), in an area west of Omaha, Nebraska. In 1938, Spencer Tracy portrayed Father Flanagan - an Oscar-winning performance - in the movie, "Boys Town."

1924 - "Lady Be Good" opened in New York City. George Gershwin wrote the music while Fred and Adele Astaire were well-received by the show’s audience for their dancing talents.

December 2nd

1927 - The first Ford Model A was unveiled on this day in New York City’s Waldorf Hotel and in 35 other cities around the U.S., Canada and Europe. The car was priced affordably: the Phaeton sold for $395.00 and the Tudor Sedan for $495.00.

1952 - George Jorgensen, a former G.I. who had gone to Denmark in 1950, prepared to return to the U.S. this day -- as Christine Jorgensen. Jorgensen had undergone 2,000 hormone injections and six operations performed by sex change surgeons.

December 3rd

1955 - Elvis Presley’s first release on RCA Victor Records was announced. No, it wasn’t "Hound Dog" or "Heartbreak Hotel". The first two sides were actually purchased from Sam Phillips of Sun Records: "Mystery Train" and "I Forgot to Remember to Forget". Elvis was described by his new record company as “The most talked about personality in recorded music in the last 10 years.”

1967 - The world’s first successful heart transplant was performed. Dr. Christiaan Barnard performed the operation at Cape Town, South Africa.

December 4th

1955 - As part of an NBC-TV special, mime artist Marcel Marceau appeared on television for the first time. In a rare speaking role, Marceau was heard to deliver the memorable line, "Pretty funny stuff for a mime..."

1965 - Composer, lyricist, and singer, Jacques Brel made his American debut in concert at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Brel composed "Jackie", "You’re Not Alone", "If You Go Away" and more.

Thanks, Scout! Some of the old movies were wonderful, weren't they?

Well, I've been out of the loop for quite a while, but I'm hoping to get back on RR more often now. We shall see. grin

Lovely opening. I'm not into pop music and did not click on the music. But it is fun to see the interests of others. Remember, I heard it all 60 years ago.

Scout, I have a clip of the late Lucia Popp singing an aria from an opera not performed for years. I've forgotten how to post it. Can I email it to you? It is a thing of beauty in the form of the Little Mermaid done classiclly.

Sadly Lucia Popp died several years ago and her youtube stuff is warn out and is impossible to link. If I can find a better link I will email you. I will have JJ try to find a better link. It is one of the most beautiful arias ever sung.

I am back from a lovely week with son, grandson, and daughter in Palm Springs and 29 Palms. The son gson have flown home and now I get to set up my new desktop computer -- dude you got a Dell -- which I have lusted after for months.

For those who have gone through this, I am opting for a complete clean install of everything which is a lot more work than the alternatives but insures I am not bring anything I don't really want to the new device.
