Scout, I do not shut the missionaries out of my home or my phone. Most people want to share what makes them happy with others. I close them off only when they put on a threatening voice. My point is that happiness-sharing is not what they want. They seem to have all that they need for inner salvation and want me to sign up with them. My lack of belief cannot learn from them.

I am much more offended when the Republican National Committee demands money from me. They don't want me in their organization at this time because they cannot be trusted to talk about the truth.

On the internet, the forums are famous for their hypocrisy in setting up others only to knock them down as quickly as they can. After a while, many simply stop using the forums. The minute religion enters the discussions, it becomes a war of words.

In the past, I often invited members of a certain proselytizing denomination into my home to discuss religious matters. In part, it was a selfless act of community service to spare my neighbors their attentions, and in part, in order to study the peculiar psychology of religious fanatics. I was always very polite with them, and only expressed my own views very obliquely. Since I know the Bible almost as well as they do, discussing things with them was very easy.

However, some trustworthy friends told me a story about these people gaining the trust of an elderly lady and getting her to make the Church her heir when she died. Soon after, the Welfare Gestapo showed up at her home and whisked her off to the loony bin. She lost everything.

Coincidence? Perhaps, but I decided to take no chances and no longer indulge my sense of amusement by talking to these people.

Hmm Perhaps "many" is a bit overboard:

Thanks for he Catholic News.com link. I hadn't paid a lot of attention to this issue and I was surprised at the number of cases. And then I got to thinking about when I was an altar boy and suddenly I had these flashbacks. Then I had a flash forward to a check with six zeroes between the 1 and the decimal point. And suddenly I began having more flashbacks.

Hey, Phil, what kind of law do you practice?

Churl, I practice estate planning and probate law, nothing to do with abuse by priests

Again, its the whole moccasin thing.
Yeah. Too bad I didn't say that. As to the moccasins, do you think that there is only one pair -- and you are the sole owner?

Well of course you have! It's that innate brilliance that comes out in every word you type! Dieties! I mean, really, who else could fathom it!

Oh goody, a teachable moment. One of the curious things about New Left influenced modern 'liberalism' is the knee-jerk responses that are associated with it. For example, Muslims, being portrayed by the usual suspects as the victims of the day, must never be associated with anything other than peace, love, and cute outfits to die for. The fact that Muslims have a recent history of killing or issuing fatwahs to kill those who they say insulted their religion should be ignored. We are not supposed to think that such actions have had a chilling effect on speech or artistic renderings concerning Islam (this from the same crowd that gives lip-service to free speech when it is in its interest to do so). This crowd's real purpose? To silence dissent and free expression.

Note also where I spoke of religionists, the knee-jerk response was directed at Christians. It is fashionable today to be derisive of Christians for serveral reasons, and considered politically correct to do so -- unless, of course, one is referring to 'liberation' theologists. Though I do not think it will come as a surprise, religionists cover a wide variety of religions, not just Christianity.

Note also that whereas Muslims in general must never be spoken of in a negative light or associated with the actions of Muslims acting in the name of their faith, no such restriction is applied to general comments concerning Christianity. Some would of course call that hypocrisy.:-)

Fortunately you have no influence on my life, because what you think you understand about me is both insulting and dead wrong. Your pretense of being above the rest of us, unfettered and clear eyed is laughable to all but you.
