I gotta say that I am more than a little surprised that this got through before the new republican congress comes in...

Senate votes to repeal 'don't ask, don't tell'
In a surprisingly bipartisan outcome, eight Republicans join Democrats to end the Clinton-era policy that bans gay members of the military from serving openly.

Some "freedoms" are not entirely unalloyed

Good to see some Senators can do the right thing, even if it goes against some part of their political base.

Now let's see if they can manage to pass the 9/11 First Responders Bill on Monday. It is a national disgrace that we have been ignoring the health problems most of the police, firemen, and heavy rescue workers have been suffering as a result of their exposure to dust and other debris from their work at ground zero.

A sad day. The end of the United States Armed Forces. Never again will there be unit cohesion. Never again will the US be able to field an effective force. It means the end of America as we knew it. Well, at least it will hasten the privatization of all security forces - something that is long overdue. Privatization is the only way to assure that we are getting the security we want.

Don't forget that this will affect women, too, rick.
