...Don't forget that this will affect women, too, rick. Oh yes, that's right. I'm sure, at some point, a str8 guy is going to smart off much to the unamusement of a butch lesbian and received a knuckle sandwich. There are a few gay men that I know at who are stationed at McClellan AFB and they tell me that the guys know not to mess with the lesbians.

Now the fine print of the repeal of DADT: "Once this legislation is signed into the law by the president, the Department of Defense will immediately proceed with the planning necessary to carry out this change carefully and methodically, but purposefully," Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Saturday. Change is coming, Gates said, but the current policy stays in place during an implementation process. The law itself will not be effectively pulled down until the Pentagon has had a chance to adjust regulations that relate to same-sex partners, including next-of-kin notification, family access to commissaries and military fitness centers, health insurance and other benefits. The Defense Department also plans to conduct training of all military personnel to emphasize current standing orders that every member is to be treated with dignity and respect regardless of gender, religion, color and other differences. When all that is completed -- a process that Gates has said could take up to a year -- actual repeal won't happen until the president, the Secretary of Defense and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff all certify that it will not negatively affect combat readiness. Even then – still not done. According to the repeal legislation, a 60-day waiting period will follow the formal certification. At the end of those two months, gays and lesbians will be able to serve openly in the armed services without discrimination. Read more at Politico.com Essentially, gay military personnel must still keep quite about who they are for at least another 14 months - until at least February 2012 - or face removal from the military just as today.

Wow, that's a lot further than I thought they were going! They will effectively be recognizing same-sex marriages. This may just open the floodgate in terms of gay rights in this country, much like integration in the armed forces was a major factor in changing the common acceptance of racism. On the other hand, it is okay to joke about a Drill Sergeant "bonding" with a recruit, but everyone will still have to avoid relationships within the same line of command. That slips too easily into abuse of power. The same rules that now apply to heterosexual relationships will apply to all.

I saw that also and my first thought was, "THAT'S gonna cause a real conflict with the Defense of Marriage Act."

DOMA is already on the ropes, having been declared unconstitutional by every court to consider it. However, you are correct, this is another nail in it's coffin.
BTW, something I have included in my estate planning workshops since spring is the fact that the IRS has decreed that California Domestic Partners must included one half of their partner's income on their return, just like married couples.
This essential negates the impact of DOMA for community property states.
