Gun control, or semi-automatic firing weapon control? No one should have more fire-power than their local police department.
Hmmmm.... philosophically interesting, rick. The implication of your statement is that you think that the relationship between local cops and the rest of the local folk is or should be adversarial
No, I don't believe that local folks or law enforcement should be adversarial. I think there should be bridges to common ground and goals: safe neighborhoods, bad-guys being caught and put into thru the court system.
...the local police should out-gun the citizenry if they are to do their job
IMHO, police are to maintain law and order. My inner fascist speaking.
(begging the question, "what do you (and they) think their job is?")
See above and I'll add, law enforcement's role should be maintaining a safe society.
P.s. by the way, the local police departments that I am familiar with or seen reported on seem to have already militarized or partially militarized themselves in the areas of weaponry, equipment, tactics and attitude.

Chicken/egg. I think law enforcement has had to catch-up to the bad guys at least make the fight even. The bad guys have always had more advanced weaponry before law enforcement. Law enforcement is always playing catch-up.
