"Opportunity" (or perhaps "opportunism") is probably the correct word, rick. Of course President Obama would seek to present himself as the "Great Civilizer" -- he is not being accused by party partisans of being responsible for the killings in Arizona. Palin is. So she must strike a balance between defending herself and her supporters against the smear while still condemning the killings. Bottom line, in my opinion, just about any event that attracts pols becomes cheapened by their presence.
