' Oddly enough some of America's best written shows originated in England. How could it be otherwise? What American series even begins to approach the wit and intellilgence of, say, Yes, Minister? And the BBC drama and documentaries---my, they are good! I did see a couple of good Seinfeld episodes---the masturbation episode, and the spoof of Italian opera with the enraged barber.... But the series as a whole... ![[Linked Image from forum.akron123.com]](http://forum.akron123.com/images/smiles/akroncdnr/SmilyYellowThumbDown.gif) Pretty dated, too. The 1990's.... In the 50's, the 1920's were disapprovingly called "The Era of American Bablylonianism." If they had only know what was coming.... The 1990's though, deserved to be called "The Era of American Babylonianism." So many opportunities wasted and frittered away! Both the 20's and 90's were succeeded by a much harsher age. But getting back to the Real World of TV, Ken Burns did a fine job on the Civil War. There is something about that unfortunate episode in American history that causes Americans to rise above their usual level of mediocrity....

I loved the original series when I was a kid. I do like the new series as well. I mean come on! Three gorgeous men, a woman who kicks serious ass and beautiful scenery what is not to like? I like also that they do the homage to the original for the opening sequence. The show itself has a bit of cheese, but overall it's pretty good. I am with you, Red. I never miss that show!

I wouldn't mind seeing a well-done and well-written version of All in the Family set in the world of the Tea Party, Joe the Plumber, and the Mitch and Tan Man Congressional laughfest. Oh! That would be fun - and give them a married (...in Iowa) Lesbian couple as next door neighbors raising mixed-raced children. Oh! One of the Lesbians is a Buddhist Captain in the Army on a tour of duty in Afghanistan and the other is a Palestinian-American college Woman's Studies professor holding the fort until her spouse comes home. Personally, my favorite scripted show is The Middle (Wednesday nights on ABC). I only TiVo two scripted shows: The Middle and Two-and-a-half-Men. The Yin and Yang contrast of those two shows suits my Gemini personality very well.

New Hawaii 5-0 is a lot more preposterous than the original: It seems like the four main characters solve every major crime without the aid of any other members of the police force, including such expected elements as dispatchers, patrol officers, roadblocks, a precinct office, etc. This may just reflect a very low budget! If the Law & Orders and CSIs score "10" for realism, then new Hawaii 5-0 is about a "3". If you want a police drama with a decent amount of realism, mixed with a little banter and romance, then I would recommend Castle instead. Or even better, The Mentalist.
The Middle is pretty good, (Brick whispering, looking down: "Good..."), and I'm sure the stark economic realism helps many viewers identity with the characters and situations. BUT, I don't have any kids and my family is not struggling so hard to keep head above water financially. Maybe its those factors and my age that makes me like Cougar Town much better. I honestly feel that it is the best scripted comedy on TV today (but I don't pay for any premium channels, so I may be missing something).
I might like Modern Family (like so many others) but every time I see Ty Burrell act for even 10 seconds, I feel this overwhelming urge to do him great bodily harm. For my spiritual well-being, I can't watch it!

PIA,I switched channels on the news last night and caught a show called NUMB3RS. It was thoughtful and used integrated math stuff to help solve the murders. It made me think how little I gained from math in my own world and how little my husband's Nuclear Physics stuff rubbed off. Oh dear, that is a tad graphic.
I have been under some powerful pain medications and have been unable to read much. I have worked many crossword puzzles and watched a lot of television. I think I have my brain back and will probably get back to my books. If not, I will continue to turn on the TV before I go to sleep. Everything is new to me except football. I was raised on radio and I can still pick up games on my satellite radio.
I miss the Pacific Ocean and envy your location.
I think I will pass on Hawaii 5 O as it sounds a tad light.
